At the sound of Newt's voice, the flow of dusty black came to an abrupt halt. It withdrew, quick as the tentacle of a startled sea creature. There was still that strange depth to the cave mouth, an absence of light that couldn't possibly be natural.
If Newt approached a little closer, and if eyes had a chance to adjust to the shade, an almost-hidden ripple could be seen along the stone walls and outcroppings. They were limned with dark dust, flowing slowly deeper, like water rolling along the cave wall. Something burbled, faintly, with sound.
