The only reason James minded if she cried was because he couldn't fix it. He couldn't go back and pick a different secret keeper and keep them alive. He couldn't change the fact that Harry was raised by the two worst people on the planet outside of the Dark Lord himself. The very thought made his blood boil, but he did his best not to show her that. He pressed his lips together and pulled her close, leaning his head against hers.
"I know," he said. "It should have been Sirius. I was supposed to be Sirius, but..." Fucking Peter. It had been a week, but James still couldn't believe it. Couldn't believe he'd questioned Remus and trusted that bloody rat instead. "He's strong. We knew he would be. I just... wish we could have been there."
