WHO. The Minister for Magic.
WHERE. The Ministry Atrium.
WHEN. 12 October, 7PM.
WHAT. A long overdue address.
STATUS. Complete.
There was a certain air of exhaustion surrounding the Minister for Magic as he stepped up to his podium. The knuckles clutching his papers seemed a little too white, the skin under his eyes tinged too purple grey for him to be somebody getting enough sleep. He gave an awkward thin smile to the reporters before he prepared himself to speak, as if he was thanking them for being there, for thinking he had anything worth listening to any more. He personally doubted that fact. "My last address on the reoccurrence began with a thank you to the nation. Today, I lead with an apology." Rourke swallowed, his hands clenching the podium tightly for support. "It is a difficult thing to admit a mistake, difficult indeed. But what is far more difficult is to suffer at the hands of somebody else's mistake, to pay a price you never should have had to. I am here today to admit my own mistakes and to apologise to all reoccurred citizens of Wizarding Britain, their families, and their friends, for the suffering they have endured because of it." A murmur of whispers spread across the reporters as he paused, and then silenced instantly once he began to speak again. "In recent weeks I have been working alongside the DMLE to uncover a very grave and serious matter of corruption within the higher ranks of the Reoccurrence Management Taskforce. When the Taskforce was created, we set about to bring the best minds of Wizarding Britain together to ensure a fair and just response to the pressing issues arising as more of our citizens returned back to us. As we have come to understand, those bright minds are no longer being properly consulted, and those fair and just promises have not been fulfilled. The DMLE have today arrested three individuals on the RMT for fraud and corruption: Davey Gudgeon, Warwick Cavanagh, and Mattias Barnfield. All three men have conspired in the most serious forms of deceit and treachery, causing an insurmountable amount of harm for their own personal gains. They have lied to the public, to their colleagues in the RMT, and to me, urging me to make decisions about reoccurred people based on falsified evidence and unsubstantiated claims. Our justice system will see these crimes accounted for. However, there is only so much blame that can be attributed to lies and forged documents. I do not wish to excuse myself of blame. Please, make no mistake: we are only standing here right now due to my grave errors in judgement." Rourke continued to stare straight ahead, pausing for just a beat to allow his words to sink in. "As we move past this difficult time together, I personally promise change, accountability, transparency, and transformation in the Ministry's handling of the reoccurred phenomenon. The RMT is going to start an immediate reorganisation: over the next few days we will be establishing a permanent department for the support of reoccurred individuals, to ensure that housing, employment, and other forms of social assistance can be accessed easily with no need to go through community wardens or suffer under long wait times. All individuals and teams associated with the RMT corruption will be removed from working on any issues pertaining to the reoccurrence. All new hires have undergone an extensive and thorough DMLE screening process, to ensure that they approach this work with no conflicts of interest, and have the best intentions of serving every member of our society. Our team of experts will be restored to their rightful roles, and no legislation will be permitted to pass without explicit approval from each and every member of our appointed panel, a matter that I will personally oversee. We will be ensuring that reoccurred people themselves shape these new changes at every level, both through extensive public consultation and a number of opportunities that will allow more involvement in the legislation process." Minister Rourke looked up down to his notes, his words trickling into a deep, expectant silence as the atrium waited for him to continue. He saw his last few sentences on the page, had practiced them already. The hopeful tone, the hollow remarks. Togetherness and spirit, and all that he was ensured would go down well with the public. The same old spin. He swallowed hard. The seconds moved achingly slow, time turning to thick treacle. He looked up. Reporters were beginning to frown, waiting. A camera bulb flashed. "Finally, to the Reoccurred Resistance: it takes great bravery to stand up against injustice, and insist upon its existence where others tell you there is none. I only wish I had your courage sooner, and I hope to channel your integrity moving forward. To demonstrate my commitment to this aim I am reinstating all access to the muggle world and removing all restrictions on apparition immediately. I hope this will be the first change of many." And then he was gone, moving swiftly back from the podium, and away from the now wildly agitated crowd. |
