If Harry counted out the days he had waited to get himself to Ginny's flat, to this conversation – not easy remarks, both of them casually brushing it off, it's fine, really – there was every chance he might turn around and find a seat at the pub he knew was just down the road. There had been a moment, just a brief one, still half caught in the web of unconsciousness, when he had opened his eyes to see the bright red of her hair, her eyelashes touching her cheek, his arm that had found her waist. He might have even dreamed it, because the next thing he remembers is the sound of her shower and that terribly awkward goodbye. What are you doing, Harry? C'mon, he had said to himself, already walking away. There was some idiotic line he kept crossing and uncrossing. Playing chicken, really. His brain whirred, attempting to put it all in some kind of order: he didn't want to hurt her, he wanted her, he shouldn't have slept with her if he didn't want to hurt her and wasn't ready, she wanted him, he wanted her, maybe he was ready after all, but would being ready change anything from the last time? He didn't want to hurt her. But he wasn't so idiotic to fully believe that things were fine, that letting this sit wasn't playing on both of their feelings. He reached her door and knocked on it. He hadn't mentally scripted out what he was going to say – at the time, he had thought that best. Too much rehearsing it over and all his words would begin to sound stupid and he would never even make it to her flat. Then again, standing there at the door, he wished for nothing else but some easy cheat sheet, notes inked onto the back of his (good) hand. In reality he knew all that he needed to do was not be stupid. But, well, he didn't have much of a track record there. |
