James' day had started off... weird to say the least. His first indication that something was off was the state of his house. Everything was covered in a thick layer of dust and cobwebs. Furniture was overturned and broken. It looked like nobody had lived there in years, which was impossible because James had lived there yesterday, or so he thought. The next problem came when he realized Lily and Harry were both gone. No note from either her or Sirius or Peter to indicate why she'd left the safety of the Fidelius charm with their baby. All of these things compounded on top of one another caused an instant surge of panic to course through him. Had Voldemort come? He wouldn't have left James alive if he had. Was he left for dead? He couldn't remember anything, honestly. He tried, but everything felt like a blur--a foggy haze he couldn't clear no matter how hard he tried. Finding his mouth dry, James practically vaulted down the stairs toward the kitchen, but found only more of a mess, dust, and cobwebs. A few spiders scurried out of the way of his feet, but James paid them no mind as he ran to the backyard, only to find it overgrown with weeds. What the hell happened? "What the fuck?" he said, now frozen at the back door. Where could he go? Should he leave? He made an attempt to breathe deep, but it came out ragged and shaky and he found his breath caught in his throat. Spinning around he slammed the back door and gripped the nearest object sturdy enough to lean on, which happened to be a chair. His fingers left distinct marks in the dust, but that was the least of his worries. "LILY!" he shouted finally, deciding to do another pass through of the house before he ventured out into the world to figure out what the hell had happened. "Lily! Lily?" He paused at the bottom of the stairs, staring up them, hoping but not expecting her to poke her head out and declare this all a prank. When she didn't, he decided one last ditch effort that seemed futile. "Harry?" |
