“Nope,” the older gentleman, Elias Smethwyck, told her as he crossed his arms. “There is no Aloysius in our family tree.”
Alicia had been expecting this answer, but the concept of leaving no rock unturned was an important part of her job, even if she was frustrated with this current assignment. It wasn’t like this group was hurting anyone, and she did think they had some points, but she pushed that out of her mind.
“Is there perhaps a branch of the family that went somewhere else that you are aware of?” Alicia asked, her voice firm but kind.
“Well, there was Bram and his muggle wife Kalysta, or Kalisa, or Kelsea. But that was in the 1700s, and they were killed by a dragon they thought would give them a ride, that’s the only branch that went anywhere that was different, and they didn’t have any kids, I guess, well, she might have been with child but, they only knew each other a few months when they tried to run off on the thing. Weird though, it was a Portuguese Long-Snout and, no one did figure out how it ended up well, how they ended up with it.” He told her uncrossing his arm.
“I imagine that was a big story of the time,” Alicia commented. “Do you think I could take a look at your family tree if you’ve got a copy?” She asked. “I spoke to your cousin Tobit but he informed him his copy was only partial, something about a fire.”
Scoffing, the man grumbled under his breath. “Crap stupid drunk flaming,” was about all Alicia could make out. Alicia watched as he got up and went to the bookcase in the old study they were sitting in. Pulling down a tightly rolled up parchment he put it carefully on his desk waving his wand to open it. “See here,” he said, starting at the top. “That’s how old we are, and here is Elliot, he’s my Great-Grandfather, he created the cushioning charm, a big deal back then.”
“And today, the whole reason broom travel is more comfortable,” Alicia added getting a rare smile from him, or at least what Alicia assumed was rare given the frown lines on his face.
“That’s right, We’ve got my nephew Hippocrates, he works at St. Mungo’s and does real well there. There is also Leopoldina.”
“Now that’s a name I know,” Alicia added. “I played Quidditch in school, and might still have her chocolate frog card.”
“Ah, you played!” Elias sat up. “That’s surprising you’re short. Did you play seeker?”
Alicia laughed softly. “No, I was a chaser.”
Elias’s eyes narrowed on Alicia. “So you’re tough.”
“Got to be I suppose.” She responded with a small shrug.
The rest of her time there was going through everything Elias knew about the family, which was a lot more than his cousin did. Still, there was no one named Aloysius. Alicia left looking down at her notes of where to possibly track down family members not as well known to Elias, although she knew that was a long shot.
“It’s got to be…” She sighed, putting her notes back in her bag and heading back to the office.
Alicia found nothing inspiring or useful at the office, so she left heading to the Leaky Cauldron. The day was good as over, and she now could say without a doubt that it was most likely a fake name with a fake journal.
She’d have to just reach out tomorrow and find out what happened, for now though.
“Firewhiskey, please,” she said to the bartender as she sat back and added quickly. “Some chips as well.” Hopefully tomorrow she’d get a bit further—her own opinions on what the case meant battling with her desire to do a good job. Either way, she was curious.
