Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Penelope Clearwater "Weasley", Percy Weasley
When: Sunday evening
What: Penelope reappeared in a park and was taken to a muggle hospital. The hospital contacted her husband.
Where: Diagon Alley
Rating: PG-13 at most.
Warnings: None?
Status: private/complete

Penelope's head was still swimming. They'd kept her sedated for days. First they'd noticed a bump to her head. Then they'd heard her talking. They were certain there was something off about her and when she refused to give information they assumed it was because she was confused instead of trying to protect someone. She'd forgotten what it was like to be amongst strangers. She'd been confined to places for so long, always living in fear of the Ministry finding her. She couldn't stay awake long enough to get away from these people though. She needed to know what had happened. She needed to make sure Percy hadn't done something stupid because she'd flown Grimmauld Place. That was the last thing she remembered. Running away. She was going to take action. She had overinflated dreams of bringing down the Ministry, setting the world back onto it's axis. She couldn't remember what had happened after she left.

No one had come looking for her though. She knew enough from her brief moments of consciousness to see that there weren't flowers or people standing around her. She sometimes listened to hear Molly Weasley's knitting needles hitting against each other or laughter from Anthony or Michael. She couldn't hear any of the familiar noises of Grimmauld here. There wasn't even the habitual shrieking of Mrs. Black. The absence of those noises made her brain worry about the noises she wasn't familiar with. Heels outside of her room made her worry that the Ministry might be sending someone to arrest her. Every strange face was suspect instead of friendly. She hadn't been thinking when they'd tried to get her with forms for the fifteenth time in so many days. She hadn't been thinking when she signed her name 'Penelope Clearwater Weasley'. A nurse put the Percy with the Weasley and did the research.

When she'd woken up, the nurse told her that they'd sent a message to her husband. What if the message hadn't gotten to Percy? What if the message had gotten to someone else in the Ministry? What if they were both sent to Azkaban now? This was a nightmare and certainly not what she had intended to happen. If Percy thought she was hurt, he'd show up. She didn't want the Ministry to find out he'd come to look after her. She was a muggleborn. She was on the run from them. If they found out he wasn't with them, they were going to punish them both. Death had come to so many in the last few months. She was afraid of death coming to him. She couldn't plead for the hospital to undo what they'd done though. It had already happened. It was too late and there was no going back. All she could do was stare at the walls, listen to the noises and wait for something to happen.

Percy had spent a few disquieting moments in the hospital lobby where he contemplated simply not answering the telegram, but then his inherent Gryffindor courage under pressure and his own staid sense of responsibility kicked in and he went to the desk to ask after the healer who'd sent him the note. The Muggle facility was loud and bright and he winced a bit as someone came rushing by fountaining blood, but eventually he found himself speaking with a serious little man with a twitchy cheek muscle and tired eyes and then even later he found himself standing outside of the room on the Psychiatric Floor, because apparently they thought his wife was a bit mad.

His wife.

He wasn't sure what to expect, and it wasn't until he carefully knocked and opened the door that he manage to quiet the nerves that threatened to send him back out again.

Penelope's eyes moved over to the door when she heard the knock, her pale hands gripping the sides of her hospital bed. She wasn't sure that she remembered to breathe because the footsteps were still Percy's even if they were different than she remembered them and the hair was still the red hair she remembered. He wasn't dead yet.

"Are you mad?" she said in a hushed voice, ripping a line out of her arm as she moved clumsily to shut the door behind him. "If the Ministry knew you were here with me. They'd send you to Azkaban. I didn't mean to give up your name. How could you be so foolish as to show up here? They're going to find out now. They're to kill us both."

She was the one that probably sounded mad but from where she was from that was there reality. He lived the life of a pro-Ministry, pro-Dark Lord person and snuck away to his life with her and his family on the side. There weren't allowed to go out in public and people certainly weren't allowed to know they were married since the ministry banned marriage to muggleborns.

She covered her arm with her hand, exerting pressure to stop the bleeding that had occurred from removing her own ivs. She wasn't even sure where her wand was anymore.

Percy's eyes widened as Penny came stumbling toward him, blood coming out of her arm, and on instinct her pulled her closer so he could see her arm, his large hand clapping over hers as he leaned on the door and reached for his wand.

"Hold on, hold still," he said. "We need to talk. Things aren't what they seem just now, but you're safe, alright."

He felt a sense of relief at seeing another of his friends alive but also terror that somehow, somewhere, he'd married her.

At least she was still his Penny though, dark hair, the same eyes.

Penny winced, waiting for him to heal her. She just wanted to get away from this place. She needed the muggles to let her leave this place. She didn't need anymore of whatever they were putting into her system. She needed to go back to the place that she knew.

"Have I been here that long?" she asked, dark eyes glancing him over as if trying to figure out what precisely he had been trying to say. She might have thought she'd been here a week or more. She didn't think it could have been more than that. Surely, something hadn't happened to overthrow the government and to get things back on track in such a short amount of time. If they had, where was his mother? Where was Ginny?

"If it's over, why didn't you look for me?"

She was so confused and she wasn't sure if it was the muggle medications meant to keep her calm or if it was the slightly blood lose from trying to get herself out of this place. She leaned into him just to keep herself upright though. She was feeling more than a little woozy.

"A bit," he said vaguely. She looked well enough to travel and surely they could check her out at St. Mungos. "I just got the telegram today, but I understand you've been here at least a few days."

He waited a moment, then placed a Muffliato charm around them and carefully warded the door.

"It's complicated, Pen," he said after a moment. "There was ... an accident, of sorts. Something at the Ministry at the Department of Mysteries. It took people out of their own times and apparently alternate universes and brought them here. The world.. your world you're from is different from the one we're in now. It's different from the one I was in before I came here."

She wished she had any idea of how truthful that statement was. It felt like just a few days but at the same time it felt longer. She wasn't so sure she knew what was up at the moment though. She was completely dependent on him to tell her things and it almost bothered her. She hated feeling so dependent even with Percy.

She let him ward the door, letting a hand go to the wall to keep herself upright. She wondered vaguely where her clothes were. They couldn't hold a healthy woman of her own will here. She just wanted to get out and leave regardless of anything or everything. She was busy thinking about finding it and where to go from here as he was explaining mysteries and alternate universes.

"So you're going to tell me that you're actually here on the word of the Dark Lord and you're about to kill me?" she asked after a long moment trying to think of different universes. She couldn't take it terribly seriously though because she couldn't honestly imagine a place where Percy wouldn't have eventually chose her. Right? That wasn't what he'd come here to tell her was it? "I've been drugged. I'm not crazy. You're here though and you're still Percy. And any Percy is technically my Percy. You didn't just come here to tell me that you're not."

"No," he said, trying to make his voice reassuring. "I'm still... well, I'm still Percy and you're still Penny. As far as I know we're friends. But I got the telegram and of course I had to come. It said my wife was here and I... well just because I don't remember marrying you, Penny, it doesn't mean I shouldn't have some obligation for what another version of myself did. If nothing else I owe it to you as a friend."

He looked around and then conjured her a jumper and skirt. "Here. Get dressed. You can't stay here, that's for certain."

Penny inhaled sharply at the word obligation. She felt flashbacks to being fresh out of Hogwarts and deeply in love with she. It reminded her of all the moments she'd raced out of work to cook for him and then been disappointed when he'd stayed half the night at the Ministry. She remembered just how it had felt every time he felt obligated to pick the Ministry over her. She'd broken up with him then and eventually he'd figured out things. It was hard not to get upset at this though not when she also remembered him risking everything to marry her and to help his family.

"Thanks," she said quietly taking the clothes from him and moving to replace her hospital gown with these jumper and skirt. She would have preferred to have all her things back but these would do for an escape. She didn't put much concern over him being in the room. He might not be married to her but she was married to him. She didn't actually care that he was there. She just changed and started looking in drawers for the rest of her things. Especially her wand. She needed a moment to think before she went and countered what he was saying anyways.

After a minute, she found her shoes and other things in a bag tucked neatly away and she pulled them out. She opened it long enough to tug on the shoes and return her wedding band to her finger. It was her silent rebellion against what he was saying.

"I don't want to stay here but I don't want to be an obligation. We were dying for things to be over so we could stop hiding and start a family. Tall, skinny and smart Weasley kids. You're not obligated to me if you didn't say the words or make those promises though, Perce - My parents were hiding. I don't even know where they'll be here. I can go stay with them though or something if I'm going to be seen as some sort of burden."

Percy heard the terseness in her tone and felt a sense of remorse, because it was so like back when things were difficult for them, when he'd isolated himself from everyone, his family, even her.

"It isn't that," he said quietly. "It's not an obligation in that sense. And I understand what you're going through, at least some. I'm strange here too, I left things, lost things too. And you are someone I care very much about, Penny, whether or not I'm married to you. I wouldn't leave you here. I wouldn't... " He stopped and nervously pushed his glasses up his nose as she began to dress. Part of him wanted to turn away, but part of him also accepted it, simply averting his eyes to give her some privacy as she changed.

"I'm at a room in the Leaky," he admitted. "I stayed with my brother for a few days, and my parents, but it was hard to be reminded and to be a reminder for them. You're welcome to join me, if you'd want."

That's where it all got confusing. She still wasn't even sure that this wasn't just some crazy dream. She wasn't sure how it would work living with him when he looked like the man she loved and considered her husband. How was she supposed to act? Was it cheating on her Percy if she accepted and her heart still responded the way it did to her Percy just because he was Percy. It wasn't something she was sure she could begin to process right now. The whole situation was too strange to begin to figure out.

"The house in Constantine was barely as big as this room," she told him after a long minute. She'd hid there by herself for weeks with the exception of the nights Percy stayed. She'd been itching to move to Grimmauld Place by the time the offer came up. She could live with small quarters if it meant being able to go outside again and maybe find her family. She could get her job back too. "I'll come for a few days and if I get in the way, I'll move out."

That to her felt like a fair offer. She was attempting to be level and not emotional. It was very hard to think with her head at the moment though when her world was upside down. Even if he looked like Percy. He wasn't Percy. The Percy she knew was dead here and this person was someone else. It was like starting all over again. Penelope Clearwater always kept her head on though.

The thought of her being cramped in a small space, of Oliver, marked, made him think of all the possible worlds, possible hims. Were there places he was a Death Eater? Dead? Alive but still a Ministry man who was isolated from his family? It made him think of all of his mistakes in the past and how he'd tried to change, to be a better man.

"I think that sounds reasonable," he said quietly, giving her a smile. "And at least well... you won't have to be in hiding. You're not the only one discovering that, I can assure you."

She wasn't sure that being in hiding was really that bad if it meant being with the people she loved though. It wasn't exactly a situation that she was winning in. She'd wanted freedom to be able to exist with the people she loved and now she was free to do that but the people she loved weren't there. Not really. This man in front of her was Percy but he wasn't really Percy. It was bittersweet.

"You," she started to ask after a long minute more curious about the life he lead where he came from than the world they were actually living in. "Were you married? Did you have children? What was it like there?"

Now that she was dressed he waited a moment before taking her arm and guiding her out of the room, casting a notice me not spell on them before they left and hoping no one would ask questions.

"It was similar to here," he admitted. "And I wasn't married. No children. Spent alot of time with you though, and Meg." He left the part out where he'd been hoping he and Meg might start something up. It seemed unnecessary and cruel.

They gained the lift and he heaved a sigh. "I want you to stay with me for now," he said. "I don't have much here, and you don't either. It seems well... we're still important to each other. Right?"

Penny stayed close, let him guide her out of this place. She wasn't exactly sure how to get out of it. She'd been out when she'd been brought in. The fact of the matter was that she wasn't sure that there was anyone else she could hang onto or trust in this place. Whether they belonged in the same world or not this was some form of her Percy and she had no choice but to trust in him.

She wasn't sure who this Meg person was. In her world, there wasn't a Meg to be seen. There was just them and sometimes Oliver. There were the other people who'd been taken in by the Order for safety but there wasn't a Meg amongst them. She'd known Percy well enough to be able to read between the lines.

No only did he not love her but he was involved with someone else. It was all a particularly bitter pill to swallow considering how long she'd waited for him. She'd stuck by him even when he turned on his family and he spent all of his time at the Ministry. She'd been one of the few people who never gave up hope on him. It felt like betrayal.

"Don't be daft," she told him once in the confines of the lift. "You'd be important to me in any universe and even if you didn't stick with me in yours. I know I was still behind you. You were my first and only love. You don't just move on and forget about that."

His eyes went over to her. "More like you didn't stick with me," he told her. "You were a healer, and you spent so much time at work I never saw you. It just..." he trailed off, and without really thinking about it, he let go of her arm and wrapped his around her shoulders.

"And I never forgot you were my first love, Penny. Or that I failed you as much or more than I failed many of the other people I loved in my life."

She looked at her feet. Him touching her felt appropriate and right but her head still felt twisted over the whole situation. She wasn't sure if it was actually appropriate or not. She had never been a Healer in her world. She'd done experimental charms. She'd brought him lunch when he refused to leave his desk. She'd tried to make him go home and get sleep. Imagining her having too much time for him felt alien. She couldn't picture it.

"If I hurt you in your world," she started after a long moment, "I'm sorry. You never failed me though. You made mistakes. We all make mistakes sometimes. The thing about mistakes is that you can fix them though."

Percy looked over at her at that, and squeezed her gently against his side, letting her go as the door opened.

"I know," he said. "I realized that after the war. After Fred died. That you can't change what you did, but you could change what came after."

They stepped out into the lobby and his hand found hers. Having her here... it was strange, but it was good. Her being as lost as he was, like Oliver was, it helped him make sense of his own disorientation, of his own sadness. It made him feel less alone.

"Whatever happened, has happened," he said. "I am still Percy and you are still Penny and we still have each other, even if nothing else is the same."

Since the moment, he'd set foot in her room and broke the news to her she'd not felt something. The connection was there but she still had felt alone. When she stepped out of the lift, it was back though. This was Percy. This was her Percy and she could cling this this. She felt less alone with with there.

"The war was still on where I'm from," she said quietly. "There were so many deaths. I never want to go back to hiding away in small houses and not living my life. I don't think anyone goes through that and puts work before anything anymore. Money isn't the most important thing in the world."

She rotated their hands, lacing her long fingers into his before giving his shoulder a slight nudge with her own. Her senses were still off but she could focus enough to concentrate on this. She'd done nothing but sleep for so long. She just wanted to talk and walk. She wanted to move.

"No looking backwards then. Off to our little - what - room at the Leaky, right?"

He looked down at her, a fraction of a smile turning up his lips. Yes this was odd but he could do this. She might not be his wife but he was her husband. To her he was something much more and she was Penny and he couldn't do anything less than be there for her just as she could be there for him.

"Exactly right. Home I suppose. For now."

And they opened the door of the hospital and stepped outside.
