The loss of Remus was hitting him harder than what he was letting on. He hadn't been there for long, Sirius knew that, but that wasn't the point. The point was that he had lost a best friend once again, just after being able to apologize to him and make it clear that all he wanted was to mend the damaged relationship between them. Now he wondered if Remus even remembered the conversation that they had. Or would Sirius just rot in prison the way that he was supposed to when he ended up getting sent home? Would he end up sitting in a prison cell with his only remaining friend and godson assuming that he had murdered a man who was practically his brother until he could eventually break himself out and ultimately die at the hands of the family that he had worked so hard to escape from? And that was another thing, Sirius thought as he angrily stabbed his shovel into the dirt beneath him, wiping sweat from his forehead. James was here now. Lily was one thing, she was hard to see, but James... it was James. He hadn't seen him yet but he wondered if his friend even knew what had happened. He had to have, by now, if Lily had gotten in touch with him. He had to have known what Peter had done, and that Sirius had been foolish and ended up getting himself arrested for murder instead of protecting Harry. The only thing that James had truly trusted him with, and he had failed. Perhaps he had been avoiding James. Perhaps he didn't want to have that conversation at all. He planted some tomato seeds before finally putting the shovel down and sitting in the dirt, the hot sun blazing against his skin. He had been going at it for hours but people needed to eat, and who knew how long they were going to be there for? He had never had such an appreciation for muggle work until this forsaken place, and Sirius missed his wand more than he even knew was possible. "Fuck this place," he mumbled to himself, looking up at the sun directly overhead. He needed a drink. Or at least company, because his mind was racing and even he knew that his thoughts had a habit of going to a darker place when he was alone. |
