Who: Savannah Posey & Pete Whelan
Where: Austin, TX
What: backstory vignettes, part one
When: October 2010 - November 2011
OCTOBER 2010 "Okay, let me just try one more." Pete cleared his throat, making sure his tonal quality was just right before launching into the pièce de résistance of his game: "Are you made of copper and tellurium?' (Those are elements, you should recognize them.) Because you're cute. 'Cause copper is 'Cu' and tellurium is 'Te.' Get it?" The girl in front of him didn't seem to get it, though, which didn't make sense. He was pretty sure she was in the Tuesday 8AM lab that he proctored. "Come on. 'Cu' and 'Te,' Right?" He looked at her expectantly as he took another sip of his beer. Savannah nursed her own beer as the man named Pete (who assured her she could call him ‘P-Dawg’ if the urge to do so struck) explained his chemistry joke. He was the teacher’s assistant for the chem lab she had to take to finish off her general eds and all things considered he was pretty good looking, but, he was really trying to make the nerd joke work and she just wasn’t on that level. What the hell was tellurium anyway? No normal person would understand that. “Uh huh, right. Can’t imagine why I didn’t get that one right away,” she said before cracking a smile. “Honey, you’re lucky that you’re cute to distract from how bad that was.” "Maybe you just need to pay more attention next time we do a lab. You'll get it soon enough." Pete gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "And then it'll dawn on you, how good that was." And then the last thing she'd said dawned on him and he grinned, straightening up a little. "You think I'm cute, huh?" Savannah scoffed and rolled her eyes, though the smile never left her face. “I pay attention. I’m just not a giant nerd like you,” she countered, before taking another sip of her beer and looking at Pete again for a few moments. He really was cute. He had a nice smile and kind eyes and his hair was disheveled in that casual kind of way that ended up being really sexy. So, yeah, he was cute. Unfortunately, she could tell he was also the kind of guy who was used to being told how good looking he was so she just gave a half-hearted shrug and added, “I mean, I’ve seen worse.” "I'm going to be a doctor." He was practically puffing his chest out as he said it. He didn't mind, though; doctors were all, on some level, at least a little bit nerdy. And she'd said it to flirt. Hadn't she? She had. (He was pretty sure she had. She'd complimented him, anyway, so he was pretty sure she was flirting.) "So I think the nerd thing is a little implied. But we're like, the best kinds of nerd. At least we aren't socially awkward and inept like computer nerds, you know?" He grinned at her. "You want to dance or something?" “Just so happens I’m going to be a doctor one day too,” Savannah smirked back, taking a step closer to Pete and poking at his chest. Lawyers were Juris Doctors, so it totally counted. Yeah, so she was flirting a little bit. No harm in it, even if the guy was kind of her teacher. But nothing was happening between them and it’s not like she would be in the chemistry class forever even if something did happen. “C’mon, doctor, show me how not socially awkward you are on the dance floor,” she said, draining the last of her beer and setting the empty bottle on a nearby counter before offering out her hand. 'Not a real doctor, though.' The remark was right on the tip of his tongue, but then she accepted his invite and Pete managed to successfully hold back as she led him out onto the dance floor. Savannah was super hot, after all, and she actually made that Texan accent sound cute. His arms encircled her waist as they started to dance together, their bodies moving in an easy rhythm. Arms looping around Pete’s neck, she stepped in closer and let the beat of the music lead her in their dancing. A few songs passed by, their bodies inching closer and closer as time went on, until Savannah was leaning up to move her mouth next to Pete’s ear. She was a little tipsy, but not so much that she didn’t fully know what she was doing when she whispered, “Wanna get out of here?” Pete was grateful for how close they were just then; he was sure that if she could see the big grin that had appeared on his face, she would've taken back her offer. He adjusted his hold on her, his hands splayed on the small of her back, and turned his head to brush his lips against her skin. "Hell yeah." APRIL 2011 The thing about med school was that it didn't exactly leave all that much time for him to do as much socializing as he'd done in college. The work had gotten harder and more draining as the semesters went on, and now that he was almost done with his second year Pete was looking forward to summer break even more than he had last year. Plus, Savannah was going to be staying in Austin over the summer, too. He'd been surprised when she had wanted to see him again after the first night he'd hooked up with her, sure that it was just gonna be another one night stand, but she'd texted him three weeks after that night and they'd made arrangements for her to come over to his and 'hang out and stuff.' They didn't see each other all that often, relatively speaking, but Pete was pretty sure they were going out. What else could it possibly be? They'd been doing this for over six months. Tonight was a Saturday night and they'd already made plans for him to meet her after her bartending shift. So after spending the last few hours playing beer pong and Call of Duty with his roommates, Pete ambled over to the bar just in time to meet her as her closing shift ended at 2:30AM. "Hi," he said with a grin, leaning down to press a kiss against her cheek. “Hi yourself,” Savannah grinned back, leaning up on her toes and grabbing his face to kiss him back on the lips. “Thanks for coming to walk me home.” The bar wasn’t far from her apartment but even still, she didn’t like wandering around by herself so late at night. His grin broadened at the kiss, glad for the attention. "You're welcome. I'm glad you texted me." The truth was... Pete was the perfect booty call. That first night they’d hooked up had been quite enjoyable and it hadn’t changed how he treated her in the Chemistry class he was proctoring. For the few remaining weeks they’d been able to act perfectly normal around each other despite the fact that they’d seen each other naked. He was also just as busy and focused as she was which meant that she could go a month without calling him and it wasn’t a big deal at all. Just a flirty text was all it took to get him back into bed with her and it was just the way Savannah liked it. She has a lot on her plate but she still had needs. With Pete, it was the best of both worlds. She’d been stressing out over a paper she was writing for one of her political science classes so it was only natural to arrange for her and Pete to ‘hang out’ after she got off work that weekend. “So how’ve you been?” She asked as they began to walk down the lamp-lit street side-by-side. Though she wouldn’t have wanted to make this journey alone, she actually really liked being out so late at night if only to see the rare sight of their normally bustling campus so quiet and sleepy. "Not bad," he said, turning his head to smile at her as they headed towards her apartment. "Some beer pong, some video games, you know. Just blowing off steam after a heavy week. What about you? How was your shift?" Savannah laughed quietly. It hadn’t been a surprise in the slightest when he’d told her he was in a fraternity during his undergrad. It seemed like he was still living the frat boy lifestyle, just more grown up now that he was in med school. “It was fine. Some jackass kept trying to get my number but he was so drunk that when I started cutting his vodka shots with water he really couldn’t tell the difference,” she replied with a sheepish grin. Pete glanced over at her, his eyebrows furrowing together at the thought of someone else trying to creep in on his girlfriend. "Good for you. He left you alone after that, right?" “Yeah, it was fine. That kind of stuff doesn’t really phase me anymore. I’m just glad you’re comin’ over tonight. I had a busy week too so it’ll be nice to do somethin’ else besides school and work.” "I know what you mean. This semester's been fucking crazy for both of us, from what it sounded like." Pete was sure his workload was tougher than hers, of course, but any amount of work was a pain. He didn't mind helping her relax. The rest of the walk went by scattered with some small talk about their classes. Things were just easy between them, which was why Savannah kept calling him when she needed to blow off steam. The only weird thing that happened was when their hands brushed, Pete grabbed onto her hand and held it for the rest of the walk back. It wasn’t something they’d ever done before so it was honestly a little weird, but thankfully it only lasted a block or two. “I think my roommate is at her boyfriend’s house,” she said with a slight smirk as she fished her keys out to unlock the door. He nodded, considering this new piece of information with a knowing smirk of his own as he followed her inside. "Where should we do it first, then?" Savannah didn’t waste any time after setting her purse aside and quickly grabbed Pete, pulling him in for a kiss. "Kitchen counter and we'll work our way to my bedroom," she said, pulling him back in. It was going to be a good night. NOVEMBER 2011 The semester had been kicking Savannah’s ass since day one. It was her last year of undergrad so she had so much stuff to do to get ready for graduation while also working on her law school applications, studying her ass of before taking her last attempt at the LSAT in December and working at the bar. So. Life was pretty hectic. She just wanted a night to not think about all the shit going on in her life so of course her first instinct was to call Pete. She hadn’t seen him in a few months, which was just proof of how insane her semester had been, but like the reliable booty call he was, they arranged a night to hang out. She got to his apartment right on time but rather than Pete answering the door, it was his roommate who let her in. A text from Pete saying he was running late would’ve been nice so she didn’t feel like such an idiot trying to make small talk with his roommate, but luckily she was able to escape relatively fast and went back to Pete’s room to wait for him to get back. Seeing as she had a little time, she fixed up her makeup a little then strategically stripped down to her underwear and tank top before lying down on his bed in one of those seemingly effortless sexy positions. And she waited. And waited. And apparently she was so exhausted from all the stuff going on in her life that she just fell asleep, right there on Pete’s bed, where she remained when he came home and upstairs only a few minutes later. Pete had gotten sidetracked at the gym, talking to one of the other guys in his program, before he remembered that Savannah was supposed to be coming over that night. He hoped she wasn't too pissed at him. Then again, though, would she have been able to fall asleep so soundly -- and cutely, too -- if she was pissed? Waking her up seemed like it would be kind of a dick move, no pun intended, so he took a shower and had dinner with his roommate before he went back upstairs a little while later. And when he saw Savannah still fast asleep, he undressed and got into bed behind her, wrapping one arm around her waist and tucking his chin into the crook of her neck and shoulder. It wasn't unusual for one of them to stay over after they'd hooked up, but it hadn't happened for a while. Pete thought it was kind of nice to have a chance to be together like this again. Savannah slept like a rock all through the night, clearly needing the rest. During the night she’d somehow rolled over to face Pete and before she fully regained consciousness she nuzzled her face further into his chest, letting out a sleepy humming noise. Well rested for the first time in weeks, she stirred as sunlight started to creep into the room and once she realized just where she was jumped slightly and her eyes flew open. In her drowsy state she stayed cuddled into Pete far longer than she normally would. It wasn’t like they never cuddled, but that was usually after they’d had sex so it was different than what happened last night. In all the time they’d been hooking up, they’d never spent a night together and not had sex. Why hadn’t he woken her up last night? “Shit,” she hissed out under her breath and rolled over, looking for Pete’s clock. As far as he was concerned, 9:12AM was way too early for Savannah to be moving around so much, especially on a Sunday morning. "What's going on?" he mumbled, his words running together. It was a miracle she could hear him in general, though, considering how he was face-down in his pillow still. Rubbing at her bleary eyes, she pushed herself up to a seated position to make out the time on the clock and flopped back down with a frown. “How the hell did I sleep that long? Why didn’t you wake me up last night?” She asked, her voice cracking slightly from such a long period of disuse. He groaned sleepily, annoyed by the movement first and then her accusations, but kept his eyes closed as he did his best to answer. "You were tired. Why would I wake you up? And it's a freaking Sunday and it's not that early. Calm down." Now that Savannah had started thinking about the failure that was last night and all the things she had to do today it was highly unlikely that she’d be able to go back to sleep. And clearly her presence was just irritating Pete so she sat back up and swung her legs over the side of the bed before standing up. “Just go back to bed. I gotta run,” she said as she began to pull her pants back on. "Um, okay." Pete blinked a couple of times, trying to consider his options, before pushing himself up into a sitting position. If she was gonna go he had a feeling he couldn't do much to stop her, but it was kind of confusing figuring out exactly why she was so upset. It wasn't that late in the morning. Unless she had a thing to be at, it kinda looked like she was flipping out over nothing. "If you wanna go, that's fine. But I don't mind if you stay." He rubbed a hand over his face, trying to wake up a little more. "I don't want to keep you if you're just going to freak out about whatever you have going on, you know?" “Well I just kinda feel like last night was a waste because I slept through it and I do have some stuff I have to do today. So just go back to bed, Pete,” Savannah said, her pants on and buttoned now. "Um," he said again, eloquently. He'd thought last night had been pretty great, actually, but if she felt differently he wasn't sure how well he'd be able to change her mind. "Okay," he said, swallowing his disappointment as she started to get ready. Running a hand through her hair, hoping she didn’t look too disheveled, she located the rest of her thing and shouldered her purse before looking at Pete again. “I’ll call you, okay?” And with that she turned and left the bedroom. |
