Maggie is a shut in. Her whole world is the park, her only knowledge of the network comes from people referring to it, or telling her to respond to something on it. Even before the zombies hit, the internet was just something her kids plugged into and she monitored the best she could by only allowing one computer in the house in a public space. She'd had an ipad for cooking and sending videos of the kids to Tuck Sr.
But when Adelaide drops that child into her arms, she feels as though she is connected to the universe. He weighs more than Sofia did, he smells different. But he is a babe, and her arms wrap around him naturally and she holds him with the confidence that only time and experience can bring. Her first instinct is to go sit down and tell Sofia that everything is alright, but as lost and confused as she often is, she recognizes that this is not her child and that Charlie is a special gift to enjoy, and then hand back. But right then, she enjoys it. She strokes his cheek, and doesn't care if spittle ends up on her.
"Sofia," she finally says, looking at Charlie by speaking to Adelaide. "My baby's name was Sofia. I had others... they were older. One was all grown up. But Sofia was my baby. I used to make little headbands with rosettes on them for her." For the first time since she's joined the park, it didn't hurt to say that out loud.
