a change in the winds, smoke on the breeze Who: Adelaide and Rodeo Hawkins Where: Lansing residence / Dog Park What: A phone call about espionage activities and dates gone wrong. When: Evening, September 7 2018
my wings are dusted with frost and cold. for a little thing like you i'm too heavy a load. you'll struggle and falter and amble around. just follow some other storm, cause i'll only weigh you down.
you carry me home, my love. still you carry me home, little dove.
hear it approaching, the shuffle of feet, the clamor of metal and hounds in heat. we'll steal away to the glen in the east, where the path is clear for you and me.
For once, it feels like there ain't enough on his plate.
All the shit piled up right about now still isn't enough to distract Rodeo from his misery, try as he might to find something to alleviate the ache. When he returned to the Dog Park after his disastrous date with Lita, Rodeo trudged past inquiries and invitations, ignored the calls to the bonfire and offers of food, moving straight for his trailer and retreating inside. He showered to scrub off the blood but he can still feel it burning his hands like a brand he can't wash off. This is how Lita sees him now. Now she knows what kind of man he is.
Guilt wrings him dry so he has to wet his tongue with whiskey, and he's making good work of a bottle of Jack Select when the text comes in from Adelaide.
"Got some news, hang on"
Not only does the contact from his sister instantly comfort him, it also promises a distraction from the blue-hearted moping he's been doing on his couch. His feet are up on the wall and his head is pillowed on the arm so he can drink without drowning, but he sets the bottle down on the floor when his phone flips to the call screen and a photo of Adelaide making a face at him from across his kitchen table one morning pops up. Rodeo's thumb flicks across the screen instantly, answering the call. He brings the phone to his ear, sobering up slightly in the heat of the moment so that his low-down whiskey blues don't really read in his voice. "Hey, baby girl. What's goin' on?"
