It was so odd, being welcomed with a hug. Honestly, it felt like something she’d seen in movies and been told about, manners that other people had. Even hugging Day earlier hadn’t prepared her for it. Her body was stiff as she hugged back, not really fully committing to the act before pulling back.
There had been a part of her that wondered if this was just tradition. Something to cling onto and use in the face of things like death of a leader and the prodigal nurse returning. Babs knew she wasn’t coming back dewey and forgiven. She’d left, the moment her ally was gone she had run out of Austin like she’d expected LBJ to shoot after her. Which Babs almost had. And when she'd left, she'd taken her skills and ambulance with her.
Babs had seen what happened when things turned in camps, back in Arizona. It had been a defense mechanism- run before you’re run out. Not brave, she knew it, she was ashamed of it. The blond should have waited, sussed things out.
“Thanks,” she said. Her voice wasn’t the rasp it had been when she met Cal or had seen Day. “I’m lucky, I know. That I made it back, and that you opened your doors again. I know I didn’t part here the way I should’ve.” Her posture was more slumped than before- the tall, proud, head in the air nurse was somewhere inside, but not visible right then. She was tired both emotionally and physically. She wanted to rest her head onto a pillow and feel Kaleo settle next to her. But Babs didn’t really sleep anymore- not since she’d fallen asleep next to Brian and found him dead when she woke up.
"All I can say is that I left because Gray was gone and I had unfinished business. I needed to know if my kin were alive. They aren't. But now they're not undead either."
