Who: Erik Roberts & Nadia Costa
Where: The Chestnut Tree
What: Face-to-face meetings & making more friends.
When: Afternoon of Friday August 14, after this
She’d given Olivia a headsup about her whereabouts this afternoon, and even gone to the lengths of agreeing upon a safety line and a phonecall to check up on her—which also gave herself a way out, if necessary. She’d never been concerned about stranger danger before (Rio had been all laughing and bonding and meeting people on the fly and deciding, yes, hello, we are going to be friends, you’ll do just fine), but times had changed. Nadia had changed. Despite settling into the library like a warm new home, part of her was still forever wound tight and watching for the next betrayal, and knowing there was a serial killer still on the loose made it worse.
Frankly, it would’ve been stupid not to arrange any precautions. Perhaps this was how the Scout Annihilator did it, after all: lure women out-of-doors by talking about animated movies and dogs and seeming perfectly, wonderfully harmless.
But befriending people was worth it. (Plus, it was far better than pacing restlessly around the library, refreshing the quiet freenet and eyeing the stacks and throwing down her own battered books and, ultimately, staring at the clock counting down the time until Saturday afternoon and her impending visit to the Dog Park.) It was a chance to get out in daylight and see this bar that had intrigued her so much.
So she was here now, and had found a spot close to the entrance, back to the wall and eyes on the front door. Hadn’t gotten a drink to start with, even though that led to the bartender eyeballing her disapprovingly; Nadia would keep her wits about her until she met this stranger.
