Somebody had been injured. Could it be a junkie? Or maybe it could be the dealer. He’d found out from Torrie that the panther head belonged to a crew of Spanish dealers. It was the first time he was hearing about it. Could they be new arrivals? Where did they come from? Did they have any connection to the Hellhounds? There were too many questions that still needed to be answered.
He’d spent the evening catching Sol up with his findings while they waited. The forensic results were most likely not going to be conclusive until the next night. Given how long it’d take for DNA tests to return before the outbreak, a day or two was definitely nothing to complain about now. He checked in on Diaz a couple of times throughout the following day. It wasn’t until the sun had long set that she finally finished. He was rocking back and forth in a chair when she’d announced it.
Turning off his music player, Theo hung the earplugs around his neck as he rose up from his seat. “What do you have for me?” He asked, approaching her. His tone was its normal flat candor, but it had a hint of impatience in it. He was eager. Could anyone honestly blame him?
As Theo stood and came over toward her, Dani leaned a hip against the nearby countertop and crossed her arms. Unfortunately she didn’t have a lot of good news with which repay his commitment.
“I can’t tie anything you brought me to the serial killings,” she answered. It might seem blunt to deliver the results this way, but Dani had never seen the point in beating around the bush. It was what it was.
The printout of the results lay nearby, and she reached out with one hand to slide it across the counter toward Theo. “The blood doesn’t match any of the victims, or the sample from the unknown male found at the first scene.”
He tried to stay quiet as he sat in the corner. It wasn’t too hard since his mind was swirling with questions and theories, and mapping out all the subsequent steps he was going to have to take for each lead that surfaced in his investigation. But Theo had always found it hard to sit still. He had a lot of energy within him, so, despite the fact that he was lost in his own thoughts, he did a lot of idle movements. From frequent changes in position of how he sat to the drumming of his fingers on the arm of the chair, he could be annoyingly distractive to people who were trying to focus on their work. It was not something he could naturally break out of though.
“What can you tell me about the blood sample then?” He couldn’t say that he wasn’t a bit disappointed that it didn’t tie into the serial killings, but cases like these were never that simple. It would be a pure struck of luck if they were. No matter where the DNA results of the blood and the needles would lead him, he was still obligated to follow it through, especially if somebody had been injured and Austin had gotten itself new Prax dealers. Never a good sign.
"The blood is from an unknown female," she said. "Judging by the lack of significant degradation, I estimate that it's, at most, only a few days old."
Without having seen the scene and with only a sample to work on, Dani had no idea of the circumstances in which the blood had been shed. It wasn’t likely to be good, however, since it had ended up in the lab.
“I also found the same blood on several of the needles I tested.” A junkie using as frequently as she suspected this one was didn’t have a very high chance of being found in good shape, but as that was purely speculation, Dani kept those thoughts to herself. Picking up the pages of results, she flipped to the one that showed which pieces of evidence held the matching blood samples. “These ones, specifically.”
“What are the results of the other needles?” He could probably garner a decent understanding of the report if he took his time to examine it, but he didn’t have the time and he’d rather have it told to him by someone who had a better criteria for it. Although the rest of the samples might not have anything to do with the Supply Scout Annihilator, Theo needed to know them since they could potentially lead him to the injured girl and possibly the Panther crew. His primary focus might be on the serial murders, but his most central role was to serve and to protect. It didn’t matter if they were civilians, raiders, or junkies alike. If there was a chance that their lives were in danger, he would do what he could to help them. It was his job, his duty.
“That’s all I have for you. I’m sorry it couldn’t be more.” A certain amount of detachment was a benefit in her work: emotional investment didn’t alter test results. Nevertheless, it was hard to deny her personal disappointment that the evidence she’d processed hadn’t ended up being of more use to the Annihilator investigation.
“Contact me if you find anything else. We’ll be here.” In the meantime, there was plenty of other work to be done.
