Who: Savannah and Maizie
Where: the LBJ
What: dog walking and general angst
When: Friday the 14th, evening
After texting with Savannah, Maizie spent the next hour with one eye on the clock. Though being punctual was normally pretty low on Maizie's list of concerns, she wanted to make an extra effort tonight. It seemed like she'd been doing that a lot lately, when it came to Savannah. The two of them hadn't ever been that close, but now they needed each other. Or, at least, Maizie needed Savannah. She didn't know yet if it went both ways.
Running down to the kitchen (for no other reason than because she'd told Savannah she was going to) turned out to take longer than expected. She used to be able to slip through the shelter without anyone really taking notice, but now sympathetic looks seemed to follow her everywhere. And then there were the people who had to stop her and ask, "How are you?" in that particular tone of voice -- Maizie knew everyone was trying to be nice, but there was no good way to answer. "Fine" was a lie, but no one wanted the truth either, which was, "Actually really shitty, thanks for asking." She usually tried to split the difference with, "I'm just taking it a day at a time," but the words had to be forced out.
By the time she came back to the Oval Office, Maizie didn't want the snack she'd made the trip for in the first place. She stuck it in her stash instead, careful to put the duffel bag she used for storage away neatly after. It was a thing she did now, almost compulsively tidying up her stuff so that nothing of hers was ever out in the way.
Not that she spent much time in the Office to begin with. After the first few days, when she'd barely left, it got so she couldn't stand being in there. So she'd retreated to various distant corners of the shelter, bringing along a book and losing herself in it for a few hours.
But anyway, now she was late. Maizie grabbed a handful of little baggies for clean up duty, debated and discarded the idea of bringing anything else, and then headed over to Savannah's office. With a nod of greeting for Harry, the guard outside, Maizie stuck her head in the door.
"I'm really sorry, Savannah, I got held up. Hope Finn isn't getting too antsy."
