Bunny didn't make any attempt to catch Nate as he slid to his knees. It was a wonder she could still stand herself, but just having his arms around her gave her more strength with each passing moment. A quiet guilt nibbled at her for ever doubting whether he would be happy to see her, but she let it pass through her like wind rattling empty branches. They've been too long apart, that was all, and doubt crept in through even the smallest of chinks.
"I know," she said, her voice soft as Nate confessed something she'd suspected for a while. Her hands stroked through hair that felt just the same under her fingertips as it did another lifetime ago. Bunny’s smile hadn’t faded, but she'd begun crying at some point too, tears falling down onto Nate’s head. She couldn’t help it. "I know. You wouldn't have left if you thought I was alive. I'm just so sorry I didn't get to you sooner."
Bunny had been chasing Nate like a hound after a fox for so long, but for the first time she rued every one of the days she spent not moving, every night she didn’t sleep on the road. If only she’d pushed herself a little bit harder, traveled a little faster. They might not have been apart so long.
“I’m here now, baby, and there’s nothing on this earth that’s going to send me away again.”
