At first, he looks at her through the mirror, eyes flicking to the counter -- not looking for any incriminating evidence so much as to make sure that the baby monitor was in the room before he shut the door behind himself. He'd assumed that she'd have it with her, that she wouldn't neglect their son, but it was good to have that assumption validated.
It meant he wasn't entirely off about her. Some of his instincts were correct.
"You," he answers, turning to look at her directly. His head tilts slightly in examination, taking in her expression, marveling at how devoid of guile she seemed, all innocent eyes and sweet, startled tone. Standing taller than Adelaide, looking down on her was not a rarity insofar as vantages went, but Robert was rarely standing if she was seated. Never standing over her while she was reclining in the tub. A small part of his brain cried out in anguish that this wrong. The gentlemanly thing to do would be to apologize, give her time to dress and get herself together. Play fair. Perhaps he would have done just that, come at her as an equal, the way he had with the Lafferty situation... were it not for the missing clothes. Not everything was gone, not even much... but there were now small holes in the inventory of his home. A simple sundress she liked but hadn't worn recently vanished from her closet. Things that would be easy to overlook if he hadn't been taking such pains to notice everything.
Little details.
Because of them, there'd be no apology forthcoming. All he does is lift an eyebrow as he meets her gaze steadily, unwilling to be flustered. His voice isn't raised in anger, but there's definitely an edge to it as he continues. The tone of a man trying deliberately not to be worked up, forcing himself to remain calm through willpower alone. "If I've given you the impression that I put my work before you, Adelaide, then I've been remiss. Do you think I'm particularly fond of Texas? That I'd allow my future legacy to rest with Olinger? No. Absolutely not. It's you and Charlie. My wife and my son are my first priority. Always."
