The news that a bar would be opening somewhere in the city was promising, not because she wanted to drink, but because it was one more location to add to her search list. Where people gathered they also talked, making it the perfect spot to ask if anyone had seen or heard of a gregarious Scot in the area. And if there was actually alcohol to be had? Chances were even better Nate himself might be drawn to it.
“Lucky and smart,” Bunny agreed. Her own experiences had shown her how important each was to survival. “And that’s how I made it from Kentucky, by being both."
She glanced over at JP and nodded slightly as if answering a question that he hadn't asked. “I'm not going to say that all of it was pretty.” Some of the brightness had faded from her tone, now that she’d begun to tread the edge of subjects that she preferred not to visit too frequently. It would've been more comfortable to talk about such things with something to do at the same time, to take her mind's focus off her words, but Bunny simply folded her arms instead.
“It helped a lot that I was able to keep away from cities before now. There are a lot less shufflers in the country, where there were fewer people to turn in the first place. And there are other folks out there, helpful ones, even.” That there were far more who weren’t helpful went without saying.
