Rodeo listens, but Adelaide can see that his mind doesn't change, that no light comes into his eyes, and that she is getting nowhere with him at all. When she hears Sarge sigh, it is an echo of her own feelings, as frustration bubbles and heated words turn to dust. She watches Rodeo notice her engagement ring, the wedding band, and he doesn't even comment on that. She didn't think that he could ever hold out against her, but seeing him do it now turns her stomach.
"Don't bother with the appeasing words," she tells him, low and a little bit hollow. She still can't pull away from his hand, though. Not if he's still holding on. She wraps her fingers into his, and then she shrugs. "I want a damn lot more than what I came here for, but it's a start."
She holds out her other hand toward Sarge, beckoning for him. "Come on, darlin'," she says. "I promise I won't go on anymore. He doesn't wanna hear what I got to say, anyway."
