Who:Gray Wolfe and Tom Kerr Where: Outside the LBJ Presidential Library on an unusual supply run What: The President and a supply scout head out. Only one of them comes back. When: July 3, 2018 @ 8:30 AM, the day following this conversation
Gray didn't often leave the shelter. It wasn't that he felt he was above such things as leaving a shelter or spending time outside its walls as it was that he just didn't have the time. Gray didn't have the time for a lot of things. He didn't have the time to build his relationship with Savannah the way he wanted. He didn't have time to read anymore. He didn't have time to breathe between things that required his undivided attention at precisely the same moment as something else required his undivided attention.
This might have sounded like whining, but it really wasn't. Gray just had duties, same as everybody. Gray had a lot of duties, same as everybody these days. And those duties meant not much time, and not much time meant not much time outside the shelter.
But Tom had found something, and Gray was very invested in getting there. So bright and early, he was at the door, waiting for eight-thirty.
Day Hunter was never late. That was the military for you.
So at precisely eight-thirty in the morning, Gray was out and ready to go. He had his good boots on, a jacket to cover his arms in case of zombies (although he knew cloth did very little about protecting a person from a zombie's teeth), his personal rifle slung over his back, and device in his back pocket. He was ready for this.
Once they were out of the library and a good distance away, Gray turned towards Tom and said, "So how's the injury?"
