Who: Griff, Marcus and OPEN
Where: Dog Park bonfire.
What: Griff goes exploring. Set straight after this. Epic strutting music is epic.
When: Evening of June 26th
Griff put the phone down with a sense of determination. While drinking probably wasn’t the best idea right now, it gave him a sense of purpose and his mind was clear enough to acknowledge that some social interaction would be beneficial.
He’d spent the better part of the week in bed and mostly asleep due to pure exhaustion and blood loss mixed with what medicine his companions had been willing to spare. It was more than he’d expected and Griff counted himself lucky. It sure beat the hell out of holing up in his broken Ford and trying to stitch up his own wound. Even if he had been sleeping in a tent on a bed made of pallets. Beggars really couldn’t be choosers and the makeshift accommodation was more than enough.
Griff groaned a little as he sat up and then a lot as he shrugged into his shirt. The bandages around his middle were tight, almost painfully so, but he understood the need. Had to keep those ribs strapped up and immobile otherwise he’d be facing a whole world of other issues. Getting one of those things pressing against this lung didn’t sound fun in any way. Habit saw him strapping his knives to his sides and slipping a pistol into a holster around his calf; you never could be too sure, and he hid it all under his heavy coat.
Pushing open the flap of the tent, the first thing that Griff noticed was the heat. The second was Grimes; the guard dogs head lifted with a small whimpering sound before he climbed to his feet. Griff was glad to see that his companion had stayed with him and had been looked after and, strange as it was, even happier to see the canine sitting watch at his door.
He stopped to pat the animal, his hand getting a bit of a lick in the process and Griff had to wonder if he was doing this all right. It wasn’t like Grimes was some pampered house pet; he was police – or maybe military – trained and Griff really didn’t know if pats and hugs were an appropriate thing. Still, Grimes seemed pretty happy, his flank rubbing against Griff’s thigh in a testimony to how large he was. The dog circled him once, sniffing and nuzzling and then he was pacing, as if waiting to see what way they were going.
Picking a direction was pretty easy. Head towards the fire. As Griff started to walk, Grimes followed along a pace behind.
The fire crackled up into the night lighting the sky an eerie red. During his feverish sleep Griff had dreamt of the heavens splitting apart and wraith rising from the earth; now he understood why. The flames cast deep, dark shadows while highlighting flicks of tents and trailers and crescents of passing faces.
And those faces all stared at him.
Griff got the feeling that strangers weren’t overly welcomed here though begrudgingly tolerated. He doubted that just anyone could walk into this camp, wherever it was, without an invitation and even once in they were still greatly distrusted. Griff could see it in their eyes, in the side long glances; the occasional whisper. Internal paranoia kicked in and Griff wondered what they knew and what they were saying. Was it simple curiosity that had them looking, or had they heard the stories of his wild ride into town. Maybe it was pure bitter hatred for being an unknown stranger in their midst.
It took a deep breath to keep himself moving. Dropping his head and looking up through his lashes, Griff continued his way towards the fire, constantly on the lookout for some ‘tall fucker in a hat on his phone.’
