Who: Pete Whelan, Savannah Posey, Lita Singh, and Nick Choi
Where: TBD
When: 3/3/20, evening
What: A double date
PETE: … And to make a long story short, that was how I found out all about how stupid 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' is and why JK Rowling didn't write it. [he reaches for more of his fries, his eyes big.] Did you guys know that Voldemort had a love child? SAVANNAH: [she laughs and shakes her head at Pete.] You’re starting to sound like Maizie. Next you’ll be going on about how those two boys in One Direction were datin’. PETE: I'm just trying to be a good listener. LITA: I’m not. All that Harry Potter stuff just goes in one ear and out the other for me. [she notices Pete’s effort with Maizie and Olivia - has been noticing it, actually - but doesn’t comment. His earnest attempts speak for themselves and Lita knows that if she’s noticing, then definitely Savannah definitely does as well.] So, you’re all caught up on the latest hot gossip on Lord Whatshisface and the boy band circuit. What else is new? NICK: Remind me not to start a Harry Potter discussion with you, babe. [he laughs and then turns his attention to Savannah and Pete.] Really though, what she said, what's new with you guys? SAVANNAH: Uh, nothin’ too much. [she bites her lip nervously before adding:] Maizie is a bit upset with me right now because she ain’t goin’ to her guitar lessons right now. I just thought it would be too confusin’ for her to get in the middle of whatever is goin’ on between Olivia and Torrie. LITA: [picks at her french fries and avoids eye contact] The situation is definitely both confusing and upsetting so, I mean, at least she’s in good company? [pauses] Maybe there will be a time when she can pick the lessons back up again. [her voice is hopeful but Lita knows it's not that simple] NICK: [reaches under the table and takes Lita’s free hand and gives it a squeeze.] Call me an optimist but I think eventually things will get worked out. [pauses.] Pretty sure Olivia thinks I’m a traitor for not choosing sides. It’s shitty what happened in the past between them, but, I think Torrie’s trying to be better than she was. LITA: [shoots Nick a grateful look and returns the hand squeeze] PETE: Yeah, well. [he and Torrie had never seen eye to eye while she still lived at the hospital, and this new development hasn't exactly endeared him to wanting to change that. He makes eye contact with Nick pointedly; if his friend hasn't yet made peace with the Hellhounds - not that Pete can't understand why - he has to understand why Savannah's daughter hasn't come around to Torrie just yet.] I think you could say that for a lot of people, Choi. SAVANNAH: [feeling the tension from all sides, she clears her throat pointedly before saying:] So. What’s everyone gettin’ to eat? I know this is a burger place but the Chicago Style hotdog sounds interestin’. LITA: [doesn’t trust herself not to make the awkwardness worse by veering off of Savannah’s polite inquiry. She turns to Nick] We should’ve thought to try one of those when we were actually in Chicago. [looks at the menu] I’m going with a milkshake. And something with a fried egg on it. [She shuts the menu and continues] You know, it’s sort of a miracle we found a time all four of us were free to do this. Shit’s been crazy lately. NICK: [visibly relaxes as the conversation shifts and then laughs at Lita’s remark.] We might have been a little preoccupied. I think Ryan and Violet are from Chicago though, so it’s probably like the real thing, maybe? [glances at his own menu.] A milkshake is an absolute must and call my boring but I’m just going to order a cheeseburger, or maybe see if I can charm someone in here to make me a jucy lucy. [he laughs.] You know we should just set aside a weekly or biweekly specific day and time to all get together, that way we don’t end up going months without getting together like this. PETE: I think that sounds like a good idea. [he manages to tear his attention away from their appetizers long enough to actually pick out an entree -- just in time, too, for the waiter to show up and take their orders. Once they're alone again, taking with him the last of the residual tension from the previous topic, he adds:] Who knew once the city got its shit together we'd all have more to do? [not like he would change anything about it.] I'm all for more of this, though, especially since things really are changing all over. [he glances over at Savannah as he speaks, unable to help it.] SAVANNAH: [glances at Pete, too, giving him a small smile before turning her attention back to Nick and Lita] Yeah, things have been changin’. I’m thinkin’ of adoptin’ Ritchie. The girls have been spendin’ a lot of time with him and have already been givin’ their sibling approvals. I started lookin’ at the paperwork for it all yesterday. LITA: [stares open-mouthed for a moment. She’s surprised but knows she shouldn’t be. They’ve all been spending a lot of time with Ritchie and Savannah was born to be a mom. She blinks out of her stupor and beams] Oh my God, that’s huge! And awesome! [she stands, walks over to Savannah, and hugs her hard] I can’t wait to spoil him. I’m gonna buy him tons of shit. What do boys that age like? [she looks perplexed as she sits back down] NICK: Wow, that’s really big and exciting news, Sav. [he’s grinning as he looks over at Lita and helpfully adds.] I was into comic books at that age, but I don’t know if that’s a thing anymore or not. [a pause as his gaze shifts back over to Savannah.] So once you get all the paperwork filed how long does it take before he’s officially yours? SAVANNAH: [she gives a happy laugh and smiles between Nick and Lita, grateful for their initial support] He likes workin’ out with Liv and I think Maizie is tryin’ to get them both through the Harry Potter series. I’m sure he wouldn’t be opposed to the pictures in comics. I’m sure I’ll have more time to figure out more of what he likes because the paperwork is supposed to take a while. There are interviews and home inspections and Lord knows what else. PETE: I'm staying out of the decision process, though, since that would be pretty impartial. But hopefully the others will see what we all see and know she's more than worthy of it. LITA: [even though Pete is staying out of Savannah’s adoption request in a doctoral capacity, Lita wonders if he is going to be more involved in Ritchie’s care once the decision to make him a part of the family is made official. Her eyes go from Savannah, to Pete and Lita purses her lips thoughtfully. Just how serious were they? Lita turns to Pete, impressed despite herself] It’s gotta be hard staying on the sidelines on this one. It’ll be worth it, though, since you’ll be able to experience the process on a personal level as opposed to professional. [To the table] Finding someone impartial on the board to weigh in on Ritchie’s adoption is probably easier said than done, though. I’m pretty sure there isn’t anyone on the orphanage board that doesn’t love Savannah. [Lita smiles warmly at her best friend] NICK: And if there is they’re crazy. [there is a definite note of bias in his voice.] Lita’s right though, I’m sure it’s hard to find someone who’s impartial. Though, I would think the orphanage board might see it as a positive that so many people get along with and think so highly of Savannah. PETE: [he beams over at the woman in question.] I think so. But again, that's why I'm staying out of it. SAVANNAH: [she smiles bashfully while looking between her friends around the table.] That’s what I’m hopin’ for, but we’ll see how it all turns out. [clearing her throat, she spoke again] Anyway, anythin’ new with y’all? LITA: Been helping out with the cure research team on top of my regular rounds so there’s been a lot of long hours and extra work lately. But I got a boyfriend that’s been taking really good care of me on the off hours, so, it hasn’t been too rough. [glances over and Nick and smiles] And we’re good. Really good. PETE: [his eyebrows raise at the official title, grinning as he nudges Savannah in a way that is entirely all too obvious.] Good. That's good. All of it sounds… good. NICK: [the grin on his face really did speak for itself regarding his feelings.] Honestly, I’m not even sure ‘really good’ covers things completely, I’d say things are great. [he pauses and then adds.] Though I think she’s maybe giving me too much credit, i’m just doing what I think most guys would do when they don’t want their girlfriend losing their mind at work. SAVANNAH: [glances at Pete, rolling her eyes at his lack of subtlety, before looking back at Lita and Nick with a smile] I’m real happy for y’all and I think all of this deserves a toast. [picking up her drink, she raises it and says:] To things bein’ great. PETE: Hear, hear. [he lifts his glass, just as he spots the waiter coming with their entrees, and smiles again.] Hopefully they stay great for a long time. LITA: [raises her glass and clinks it against everyone else's’, smiling at person in turn] I can certainly drink to that. NICK: [smiles while he clinks his glass against everyone else's.] Me too! |
