Who: Marc and Leo Russo
Where: Their place
When: 2/10/20, early evening
What: Things are changing.
"Hey. I've been looking for you." Marc said, taking a seat at the kitchen table across from his brother. He hadn't looked all that hard, just at Burgatory and at home, but it was true in sentiment if not necessarily in effort. "You don't have a shift to go to right now, right? I was kind of hoping we could talk." “Did you think about trying my phone?” Leo asked good naturedly, a smirk that only a little brother could give was curving up the corners of his mouth. As he shifted in his chair, he shook his head. “Nah, I’m off tonight,” Leo replied, his curiosity piqued in regards to just what it was Marc might have wanted to talk about. “What’s on your mind?” "I did, but it seemed like the kind of thing better said in person." Marc hadn't mentioned how he would be dropping by Rebecca's office that morning. Nor had he mentioned seeing Josh at the Doughnut Hole the day before, either. In truth, he hadn't even known what to say, but now that he was sure it wasn't just some crazy conspiracy theory, he knew it was time to find the words. So without further preamble, he launched into it: "Rebecca's still alive. And so is Josh. They're here, in Austin. I saw her this morning." Whatever response Leo might have had, whatever he had expected his brother to tell him -- a thing that couldn’t be said over the phone -- that was not it. Leo knew his mouth had fallen open in shock and his eyes were wide. Had he just heard Marc right? They had more family than just the two of them in Austin. “Are you serious?” Leo was in shock and he knew his question was pointless. Of course Marc was serious, it wasn’t like his older brother to think shit like this up. "Yeah, man." Marc kept his gaze on Leo's all the while, a careful habit that he still maintained from his time on the force in Baltimore and Austin. "Serious as hell." “So, I mean, does this change shit?” By ‘change shit’ what Leo wanted to ask was if this meant Marc would be packing up and going back to doing the husband and father thing. Deep down underneath that though was the unasked question of if this changed their plans in Austin, the ones they had held since leaving Johnson City. Hidden underneath both of those thoughts was a deep seated fear that his brother, the person who’d been there for him for years now, would pack up and leave him to deal with his demons on his own again. That thought terrified Leo and he didn’t want to think about it or look at it too closely. Marc's gaze remained on Leo's even still. They'd spent the last almost-four years together, seeing each other through thick and thin. They'd become closer than they'd ever been in their lifetime, despite knowing each other for as long as Leo had been alive, and it was a brotherhood he'd never want to take back. Things were different, though, and he couldn't just keep going the way they had been -- aimless, floating around, mad as hell the whole time and trying to swallow it down every day. "Yeah. I think it does. At least for a little bit, until I figure this shit out," he said finally. |
