Who: Pete Whelan & Savannah Posey
Where: Oval House
When: 2/9/20, evening
What: Maizie's been bugging Savannah about her Little Brother, but things are fine. Probably.
With Maizie and Olivia downstairs watching a movie, Pete and Savannah retreated to the bedroom, ready for the opportunity to decompress after a long day. All through dinner Maizie was going on and on about the boy she’d been mentoring through the Big Brother/Big Sister program. They’d had him over at the house a few times and he certainly was a great kid, but the way Maizie was going on had Savannah concerned. Phrases like “can I keep him?” and “wouldn’t it be great if he could really be my brother!” made Savannah worried that Maizie was growing too attached and could get hurt if things didn’t go the way she wanted. After changing into something more comfortable, she pulled her hair into a bun and crawled onto the bed, resting in a cross-legged position. “Do you think this mentorin’ thing was a bad idea for Maizie? She’s gotten real attached already.” Pete gave a grimace and a shrug as he took a seat next to her, his expression settling into a steady frown. "You know her better than me," he said, almost like a disclaimer. "It's easy to get attached to the kids, especially if you see most of the same ones regularly. I guess it just depends on how attached she actually is beyond the jokes about taking him home forever." He had an inkling, though, that Maizie was pretty damned attached. Savannah’s hand reached out, tracing the line of Pete’s leg until her hand found his, lacing their fingers together. “Yeah, I’m sure that’s all it is. It’s nice how much she’s been volunteerin’ but I’m sure it’s just all that time that’s made her get so close to him so fast. And really, there ain’t nothin’ wrong with her carin’ for him. That’s the whole point of the program, right?” "It is. Mutually beneficial and all that kind of stuff, you know? The kids get some steady influence in their lives and the adults get some perspective and the opportunity to give back." Pete turned his hand up to better hold hers, then squeezed her hand. "I think everyone's been enjoying getting to know him. But that doesn't necessarily mean you have to 'keep him.'" “Right. And Maizie has a weird sense of humor sometimes. I don’t always get her squealin’ about One Direction and her actin’ like we could keep Ritchie like he’s a stray puppy must be somethin’ like that,” Savannah said, giving Pete’s hand a squeeze back. Talking all of this out was reassuring. After all, it seemed obvious to the pair of them about how this whole Big Brother/Big Sister program worked. And while Maizie might be getting attached, it was only normal for her to be feeling that way. There was no reason to be concerned. |
