The thump, thump, thump of her heartbeat pounded in her ears as her dark eyes studied the timer, the seconds felt like they were moving like molasses. Demi had checked and double checked how long they needed to wait before they could check the test and yet she still found herself turning her gaze on Isaac as she asked. “How long do we need to wait?” The anxiety was evident in her voice and the way she fidgeted as she sat on the edge of their bed. “Do you think we should do more than one?” They didn’t even have an answer from the first one and yet Demi was afraid it could be wrong. The reality of what they were waiting on still had yet to sink in. They were pregnant, or, they could be pregnant. Demi was still afraid to jinx it by saying the words aloud. Superstitions had never been her thing and yet here she found herself keeping mum on a silly thing like saying the word ‘pregnant’ aloud. As she stood up from the bed and began to pace, her gaze was turned back on Isaac, a silent plea for some kind of reassurance that her nerves were normal was written across her face. He had been through this twice, the anxiety, the waiting for an answer, it wasn’t a new experience for him. Demi wondered if it felt different, or if it felt familiar and maybe bittersweet? She didn’t ask though. Maybe she would another time, but her emotions were already on edge enough that diving into a conversation about the family he had lost was less than a wise idea. Instead she spun on her heels and strode towards him, nervousness seeped through her every movement and the look in her eyes. “Is it time yet? Do you think we can look?” Isaac let out a chuckle and shook his head slightly at Demi. They’d set a timer and it clearly hadn’t chimed yet, so there was no point in looking at the pregnancy test just yet. That was one thing that he’d learned from his previous experience of all this. Checking prematurely, or going one step further and just watching the test while a timer counted down, was no more productive than watching the grass grow. Time had all but stopped during the very first test Callie had taken and then when it had turned out to be negative, Isaac hadn’t been sure if enough time had actually elapsed because nothing had changed on the test. “I think we should wait for the timer to go off first and see the first test’s results before we do another one,” he said calmly, wrapping an arm around her shoulders so he could lean in closer and kiss the top of her head. Even though she felt antsy and anxious, Demi leaned into Isaac and sighed. He had done this twice before she so trusted his judgment more than her impatience in the moment. “Yeah, probably,” she agreed while she fought down her impatience and convinced herself not to shoot a look at either the timer or the pregnancy test. Despite the fact that this felt like the longest three minutes of his life, the timer finally did chime, and with it, Isaac gave Demi a squeeze. “Ready to look?” The wait was maddening so when the timer finally chimed Demi wasn’t certain she had actually heard it right until Isaac’s voice broke through her impatience thoughts. “Yes, no, I don’t know,” Demi answered as a nervous expression settled on her features and her dark eyes searched Isaac’s green ones. “Are you ready to look?” she asked as she slide an arm around his waist and leaned into him further as if she were attempting to drawn strength from their sheer closeness. What if the test was negative? Or worse, what if the test was expired and gave them no answer at all? For months now they had been trying and for months it seemed as if it wasn’t going to happen. Now though, now it felt like their whole future hinged on this very moment. “I’m kind of scared,” Isaac admitted. If this was really happening then it meant that he could have another child that he could fail at protecting, and that right there was a horrible thought. What if he had this second chance and history repeated itself? Demi was a bigger ball of nerves than him, though, so keeping his face as relaxed as possible, he added, “But I think we should look at it.” Finding his hand with hers Demi laced their fingers together and gave Isaac’s hand a squeeze. She was frightened it might be negative, but she could only imagine the sort of emotions this was bringing up inside of him. He had done this all before and the only reason she was even standing beside him now was because Isaac had lost them. It never slipped her mind the step he was taking here, in all honestly a braver step than she was making. “This is kind of scary,” Demi replied as she gave his hand another squeeze. “But I think you’re right and we should.” Even if she was a ball of nerves that wasn’t going to change if they waited another minute or another ten. The answer on the test would be the same no matter how long they waited, so might as well look now. Hesitantly she stepped away from Isaac while still keeping their hands linked and picked up the test off the bathroom sink and turned back to Isaac. “Should we look at it together?” Isaac couldn’t help but laugh at this. For as anxious as they were to know whether they’d be having a child or not, Demi sure was delaying them seeing the results. “If you don’t turn it over right now I’m going to rip it right out of your hand and look at the results,” he said with a chuckle. “So... “ he said, looking her in the eyes, then deliberately moving his gaze down to where she was holding the test. “Let’s see what it says.” With Isaac’s threat that he would grab the test from her, Demi knew she couldn’t stall any longer. The moment she turned it over they would find out and that would be that, either way waiting another thirty seconds or even five minutes wouldn’t change the answer. Isaac was right, they needed to just look at it already. “Fine, I’m turning it over,” Demi answered with a small laugh and after she mentally counted to three she flipped the test, though her gaze remained locked on Isaac for a second longer before she finally pulled it down to the test. “It’s--” her heart had dropped into her stomach by now. “Negative.” Where Demi had expected to see two lines on the test there was only one. They weren’t parents. Shock had quickly replaced the excitement and even the anxiousness Demi had felt just moments before. All the signs seemed to have been pointing to them being pregnant, so how could the test be negative. “I don’t get it…” she murmured as she set the test back onto the bathroom counter and turned towards Isaac. “Do you think it’s wrong?” Isaac felt the sinking feeling of disappointment in the pit of his stomach, but tried his best to put on a brave face. It was upsetting, yes, but this wasn’t any kind of proof that they would never get pregnant. They just weren’t pregnant as soon as they wanted to be. “These tests are pretty accurate but you can take another one if you want to,” Isaac said, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. Demi shook her head. “No, I mean, I want to, but we shouldn’t waste the test,” she answered as she stepped in closer to Isaac, slide her arms around his waist and leaned into him. “Guess this means we get to continue trying,” Demi tried her best to grin as she pulled back to look up at him. She was trying to mask her own feelings about the test results with the silver lining, because truth be told they were having a great deal of fun trying to start a family. “Maybe we just need to increase our efforts,” she paused. “Fit in a quickie at work?” For all the disappointment she felt, Demi was trying her best to be positive. Isaac didn’t seem shaken by the results, so why should she? Isaac laughed, not entirely opposed to the idea. If Demi was joking already, he was going to take it as a good sign. They really wanted to be pregnant already, but having copious amounts of sex in the meantime wasn’t the worst option in the world. “Maybe at your work and not mine,” he said with a smirk. “As much fun as I would have laying you across my desk, I don’t think the stacks of papers surrounding us would set the mood that well. Plus my secretary would hate me if I made her reorganize all my case files if they got pushed onto the ground.” Demi’s mouth curved up into a mischievous smile. “You know your office really wouldn’t be the least romantic place we’ve ever had sex,” she pointed out, though she had long ago learned she had a very slim chance of winning an argument such as this against Isaac. “And files are moveable….” Just because she knew it was a losing battle didn’t mean she wasn’t going to make that final remark before she added. “But, I guess my work does have a convenient bed.” A pause. “And there’s always the shower.” However it actually ended up shaking out, Demi would just be pleased to see a bit more of Isaac in the middle of the day. She was incredibly greedy like that. “So basically what you’re saying is there’s no reason for us not to get back to business right this moment,” Isaac said with a grin, his hand on her waist pushing up the fabric of her shirt. “I have some time now if you do.” The twinkle in Demi’s eyes spoke volumes and gave away the fact that Isaac had hit the nail right on the head of what she had been getting at. “Exactly,” she replied. “Unless you can think of one, counselor…” her hands were already nimbly untucking Isaac’s shirt and working on the buttons as she walked him backwards out of the bathroom. They may not have been pregnant that very moment, but they would be eventually, and until that happened Demi was not at all against using their attempts to start a family as a very good excuse to keep Isaac home for a little while longer. Maybe this part really was half the fun of taking that next step into their future together….. |
