I'm going to give you much more than you need
Who: Demi Rafferty
Where: The apartment above The Bar
What: She's late, excitement ensues and she's afraid to think the word "pregnant" and jinx it.
When: February 9th, 2020 - Afternoon
She was late. The Calendar wasn’t lying -- Demi had checked her dates three times just to be sure -- and every single time she came back with the same answer. She was over a week and a half late. Could this mean? Were they finally? Demi couldn’t even bring herself to think the word for fear she might jinx it. They had been trying for months now with no success, and while she knew sometimes it took time, Demi had begun to wonder if there was something that was preventing them from conceiving. No, she had begun to wonder if there was something wrong with her, some reason fate had decided she wasn’t suited to be a mother. Those doubts, those fears, they had just begun to take root in her mind. Worries she had yet to even voice to Isaac, and now she wouldn’t have to. Because despite that little voice that had tried to convince her otherwise as the months drug on. The proof to argue otherwise was right on the calendar before her. Demi was nearly two weeks late. It had finally happened. Demi felt giddy, excited and apprehensive all at the same time. This had been what they had wanted and it had finally happened. As she stood in front of the their bathroom mirror, her shirt hiked up and her hand resting against her still flat stomach, Demi found that the idea hadn’t sunk in yet. They were going to be parents. Even just the thought brought a wide grin to Demi’s face as she peered at her reflection in the mirror. She found herself anxious and impatient for the day her hand wouldn’t be resting against flat abs, but instead might be able to feel their little one kick inside of her. She imagined Isaac’s hand pressed against her stomach as she excitedly said “There, right there, did you feel it?” So many thoughts raced through her mind as her gaze was drawn back to the calendar on her phone and the proof, right there in black and white, they were going to be parents. It was finally happening. And then another thought struck her. Should she get her hopes so high before it was confirmed by a test? Demi’s gaze was pulled towards the at-home pregnancy test that had been in their bathroom for months now. A box that had begun to taunt her. A glaring reminder that she wasn’t pregnant and wouldn’t need it. Yet now, now she did need it and her heart was impatient, Demi wanted to rip open the box that had started to exist as a reminder of what she had begun to view as her failure, and prove to herself that the months of wondering and doubt had been for nothing. She couldn’t though. Not without Isaac. Demi wanted him here when they found out for sure. Isaac deserved to be here for the news. So with a small sigh and the knowledge that she would need to wait just a little longer for true confirmation, Demi shot one final glance towards the box, let her shirt slip back down and retrieved her phone from the sink. As she exited their bathroom Demi was already typing out a text message to Isaac. > Hey baby > I’m late…I think I might be… > Fuck. I don't want to jinx it > Do you think you could come home soon? > I don't want to take the test without you After she hit send Demi shot a look towards Hobbes who lay curled up on the end of their bed. “Think you’ll like having a baby to protect?” She asked the dog, who merely lifted his head up off the bed and gave his owner a quizzical look. “Yeah, I think you will,” Demi paused a beat. “You got used to Isaac easy enough after all.” this was said with a fond smile and then knowing she needed to occupy her time -- with more than just talking to her dog -- Demi slipped out of the apartment and downstairs to The Bar. Working would keep her mind off of the box upstairs that would confirm or deny if Hobbes really would need to get used to a baby or not. |
