NOVEMBER 2nd I-35 was long and boring on the best days, but after the outbreak the miles and miles of Texas plains had become more desolate. Dallas/Fort Worth was a shadow of what it used to be. Nathan didn’t spend a lot of time eying the abandoned city scape though; it was a stark reminder that the United States had become that much smaller. It made him recall Houston and how the city he’d grown up in had been nothing but a shell of itself. Now there was miles and miles of scrub to either side of the highway, not much sightseeing to be had really. NOVEMBER 3rd Lunch had all the makings for an awkward reunion. Paige had made it clear that he was there as a friend and if she could move past what had happened through them -- especially since she was the one who lived through it all and was directly affected by their divorce -- then so could her family. So far Paige thought they were doing pretty well. She felt like a frumpy mess after packing all last night and this morning and her hair was like a big frizz ball, but her mom and dad were happy to see her and hesitantly looking forward to her move. It was a big opportunity, after all. NOVEMBER 4th After another day of packing and cleaning and getting her house ready to be left alone for a while, she had really worked up an appetite. Freshly showered and dressed, Paige made her way down to the kitchen to look for Nate. NOVEMBER 5th “Gravy, stop crawling on him like that,” Paige scolded, glancing helplessly out of the corner of her eye as her cat jumped into Nate’s lap again, scratching at a loose string on his shirt. “I’ve never really brought him in the car before. I had no idea he was going to make that howling noise inside his kennel. But being loose like this doesn’t seem any better…” she trailed off. At least they were almost back to Austin and then this whole awkward trip could be put behind them. |
