Who: Savannah Posey and Sasha Whittaker
Where: Savannah’s Office
What: Savannah interviews Sasha about the events of 9/6
When: October 4th, 2019 -- Early Afternoon
SASHA: [enters Savannah’s office and in true teenage fashion he drops his backpack near the door and kind of sprawls himself in one of her chairs. It’s a testament to how comfortable he is with Savannah that he just kind of makes himself at home.] So, ah, are we just going to dive right in? SAVANNAH: [smiles in amusement at Sasha’s familiarity but hopes their previous relationship makes the interview easier.] Sure, honey. If that’s what you want. [pauses to pull out a piece of paper and pen then says:] Why don’t you start with tellin’ me where you were on the 6th. SASHA: [thinks about Savannah’s first question for a moment.] Honestly, I think what I would really want is not to relive that day…[he gave the blonde sitting across from him an apologetic look.] Sorry, this isn’t really easy. But you need the information to like help piece together what might have happened, right? So, okay, yeah. I was at school, in the GED class on the 6th. I was sitting in the back of the room with Noa and Maizie when one of the students in the front of the room turned…. SAVANNAH: I know it ain’t easy to talk about, sweetheart. If you want to skip any of the questions, let me know okay? SASHA: [he appreciates the out that Savannah has given him.] Yeah, okay, thanks. [pauses.] Knowing that I can pass on things might make this easier... SAVANNAH: So, did anythin’ seem strange before everythin’ started happenin’? SASHA: [he closes his eyes for a moment to calm himself, his heart already racing as he has to remember that day.] The kid who turned just seemed sick, like maybe he should have stayed home that day. But nothing screamed “beware zombie in your midst.” that day in class. SAVANNAH: How long was he sick before he turned? Did you interact with him at all while he wasn’t feelin’ well? SASHA: [chews his lower lip.] Honestly, I think he came into class feeling sick. He sort of sat at his desk with his head down groaning and shi--stuff. [shakes his head.] No, he’s always sat at the front of the class and I’m usually at the back trying to avoid Ms. Devkopa noticing me. SAVANNAH: Okay, so he just seemed sick. Not… like he was gonna turn. [scribbles down a note before asking:] So then what happened once y’all realized he was more than sick? SASHA: [nods] Yeah no. He definitely didn't seem like he was going to go geek. [shoves a hand through his hair, a nervous tick to rid himself of some of the unease he feels.] He went after people in the front of the class, another student, Ms. Devkopa and Marina. [his voice falters on the last name.] Ms. Devkopa was knocked unconscious I think a...and the other student didn't make it...[he pauses again.] And Marina was bit. SAVANNAH: [gives Sasha a sympathetic look and nods.] Do you think there was anythin’ that could have been done to prevent that from happenin’? SASHA: [takes a moment to really consider Savannah’s question before he replies.] I don’t know, maybe don’t let sick students come to school? Like some kind of health screening or just being more aware… SAVANNAH: I think everyone would do a lot better if we stayed home when we were sick, whether we are at risk for goin’ geek or not. [her tone agreeing, as she makes note of his response.] Did you have anythin’ else to add or any questions for me, sweetheart? SASHA: Maybe that should be a new city innovative or something. [pauses to think about her question.] Not really, I mean, I guess I wish that they didn’t isolate people when they’re in quarantine. Like I get they’re worried that people are going to go geek, but it’s really hard for the families and people who care about them to be cut off from them. [another pause.] Do you think with these interviews they’ll figure out how this all happened? SAVANNAH: [gives an understanding nod] I know it’s hard, sweetheart, but we’re all just tryin’ to do all we can to keep the city safe. And if we learn anythin’ we’ll be sure to let y’all know. [reaches to turn off the recording.] Thanks for takin’ the time to talk to me and make sure you say hi to your dad for me. |
