Who: Nina Clarke, Amanda van Eeden, and Zach Montgomery
Where: The Capitol
What: Nina and Amanda interview a Zach for the position of their joint secretary
When: Backstory, Early July 2019
Nina Clarke had never been so important as to warrant her own secretary before, but after a month's time in her new position, she was beginning to find she needed the extra help. So she asked around her immediate circle and eventually, Kitty Gilmore indicated that she knew someone who was interested in the position. After further consideration, it was determined that the position would be expanded to serve both Nina and her government liaison, Amanda van Eeden. And so the two women found themselves waiting to meet the candidate in Nina's office. ---- NINA: Oh! [she recognizes his face immediately and rises to meet him, extending her hand.] Hi, Zach. What a surprise. [It's not an unwelcome one, though, despite the possible complications in her personal life.] This is my colleague, Ms. Amanda van Eeden, from Denver. ZACH: [he offers them both a smile as he gets them, shaking Nina’s hand before offering his own to Amanda.] Very nice to meet you, Ms. van Eeden. Nina, always a pleasure. [settles into the chair that was waiting for him, his hands folded on his lap.] AMANDA: [noting Nina’s warm greeting with interest, she gives Zach a brief handshake before sitting back into her own chair.] Nice to meet you as well, Zach. Please, call me Amanda. [her gaze flickers toward her colleague] Nina, would you like to begin? NINA: Yes, thank you. [Takes a seat in front of her desk instead of behind it, the three of them facing each other in a rough circular arrangement of chairs. Water is available on the desk.] I expect you prepared a resume, Zach? ZACH: [gives a nod to Amanda when she corrects him on what to call her, and glances over to Nina.] Oh, yes. [reaches down for his bag and pulls out copies of it to hand over to each of them.] It’s not very long, but I promise I’m a very good and hard worker, it’s just I’d only finished high school when all the zombies happened so… it’s short. AMANDA: [looking over her copy of Zach’s resume. it is short, as promised, but that's not necessarily an issue.] What had you planned to do after school before all this happened? ZACH: I was going to go to college - Yale. [smiles brightly.] To study English, mostly the writing side. So I would be very good if I needed to draft or edit correspondence for you. NINA: [she nods, considering this.] Can you share your understanding of the position and the work expected of you? ZACH: I was told it was a position for a secretary, and also as a go between for the two of you. [pauses, tilting his head as he looks at them.] Is that right? Or was I misinformed? NINA: This is correct. We haven't officially listed this role yet, so I'm simply curious about what you believe the associated duties would be or what you expect to do here in the position. ZACH: [smiles, giving a nod.] Oh, well that's what I’d been told. I’m guessing secretarial stuff like answering phones, working with other departments, scheduling things… I’m good at multitasking - I got used to that real quick with the kids. NINA: That would be the majority of the duties, yes. And you'll do so for both of us. AMANDA: [with a small smile in return] There would be some overlap, given how closely Mayor Clarke and I work together, but often it would mean twice the amount of tasks. Do you think you'd have any trouble balancing these duties for two people? ZACH: No, I don't think I would have any trouble with that. I know it's not the same, but kind of in terms of juggling a lot at once - in school I was in a bunch of advanced placement courses and I got straight A’s, even when I was playing soccer or after Gigi came along… [shrugs.] I think I do better when I have a lot to do. NINA: [she allows a flicker of an approving smile.] Do you have any interests in government? Or law? ZACH: [brow furrows slightly in thought.] I never had any ambitions to go into government or anything like that - I wanted to write. Law is interesting to me, though, in some ways. Not in that I think I would be good at it professionally, but it's interesting to learn about. NINA: What kind of writing interests you? Fiction? Journalism? ZACH: Fiction, yeah. I wanted to focus on creative writing at school, but then… zombies. AMANDA: [with a slight nod] So, it may not be the kind of job you pictured before, but is this position one you could see yourself being satisfied with six months or a year from now? ZACH: Yeah, absolutely. It sounds like there's a lot to do and that it'll be challenging - and I like that. I do better when I have a lot to do. My job I’m doing now, I kind of fell into that one… this one I wouldn't have applied for if I didn't think I would like it. NINA: Can you share an example of a time in which you were aware of or given confidential information? Was it difficult to keep to yourself? ZACH: [brow furrows in thought.] Well I can't think of anything specific, work-wise. I don't do much with confidential stuff there. I mean, when I found out Kitty was pregnant the first time that was kind of a secret for a while and I didn't tell anyone except my parents, who I was allowed to. I’m not really one to go running around talking about things that aren't my business. NINA: [she nods with a bit of faint approval.] There'd be a certain amount of exposure to sensitive information and details in this position, so we'd just like to make sure it's an area in which you'd be able to show restraint. ZACH: Oh, of course. [shakes his head.] I wouldn't ever talk to people about work things I shouldn't. [grins a little.] The other parts of my life are plenty exciting enough, I don't think work would be in my top five of topic choices. NINA: Hmm. [it's clear she takes issue with this, a bit, but then again -- not everyone finds work as exciting as she does. She glances sideways at Amanda, silently asking whether she has any other questions at this time.] AMANDA: [looks over to meet Nina’s gaze and gives a small shake of her head. as far as she’s concerned, she’s heard everything she needs.] Thank you for coming in, Zach. We’ll be in touch soon to let you know our final decision. |
