Isaac, Vic, Nathan and Kāne
“Head that way!” Kāne ordered as the zombies started closing in, motioning the way toward quarantine before starting to run himself. There was safety in numbers, and considering they were all able bodied and not injured it gave them a better chance of all making it to where they were going. He kept his head on a swivel, keeping an eye on all of them and also the distance between the runners headed for them.
Nobody had to tell Nathan twice. He followed the big guy and the military man towards the street they’d chosen, but his pace wasn’t fast enough and the first of the runners came up on his heels quick. For everything he was capable of, he wasn’t capable of moving any faster, his earlier sprint had already worn down his energy and left him trying to dodge zombies instead. He moved left away from one and ran his shoulder into another. That one got a good grip on his arm and took him down to the pavement.
They were a tangle of limbs, and for the first time since he’d been bitten in Corpus Christi Nathan felt the same abject terror that he’d felt then. But he successfully got himself free and evaded a few more of the runners, but not before the one that was still struggling back to its feet from the road sunk it’s teeth into the meat of his thigh.
A guttural, terrified holler of pain escaped him as he wrenched his leg free and tried to run again.
Vic swore under his breath at the sound of falling bodies behind him, his worst fears realized once he turned around to see the bearded guy crawling away from the zombie who'd bitten him on the leg. A couple of feet behind him, Isaac was down on the ground too, bleeding from the arm as he tried to get away from the runners who'd caught up to him. Vic ran over towards him, gun in his hand, and pistol whipped the nearest zombie on the side of the head, roaring with fury as the blow connected and the shuffler went flying.
There was another one coming up towards the two of them, but Vic bent down and got his arms underneath Isaac's armpits. "Stand the fuck up," he ordered; Isaac was smaller than him, but he certainly wasn't small. He didn't argue, though, just let Vic hoist him up and over his shoulder, before he turned back towards the quarantine center.
Kāne drew to an abrupt halt as their escape went horribly wrong, and rather than keep on the path toward the quarantine center he turned to get back to the man crawling on the ground. He ran back and kicked the zombie off him, giving one last sharp kick to get it away before leaning down to pull him up over his shoulder. With the bite on his leg, Kāne wasn't sure how he would be to walk - and he could probably carry him faster even if he could. The center wasn't too far, and they could make it - all four of them.
