Jane looked to Mina busily getting lunch around, to the proffered stool, and then back to Mina. Her friend seemed a bit antsy, or frazzled somehow, and Jane reached out to touch Mina's arm lightly in an attempt to soothe her. She wasn't sure if her gesture had the desired effect on Mina and so with a gentle squeeze, Jane retreated.
"How about I get the drinks, and let you concentrate on the food prep?" Jane asked, already moving to the fridge. She selected two water bottles, placing next to Mina and opening the other for herself. She took a seat at the island and took a sip, watching Mina as she flitted about the kitchen.
"Wraps sound amazing," she replied, reassuring her friend. Truthfully, the younger woman could have served her slop in a bucket and it still would have been the highlight of Jane's week. Jane was glad she and Mina both had been able to snag real, honest-to-God houses for themselves. Unfortunately, the one downside to this was that now that they were no longer living in the same building, there was less of an occasion for Jane to run into Mina. The fact that her friend had invited her over to have lunch with just the two of them was a real treat.
"Damn, I should have thought to stop by that new doughnut place and snag us dessert," Jane said with a snap of her fingers, following Mina's movements. Fresh food and actual eateries were still a novelty to Jane and, she suspected, to much of Austin. "We'll save it for next time. Have you been there, yet?"
It only now occurred to Jane that she knew very little of what had transpired in Mina's life while she and Mina's dad were out corralling vigilante Hellhounds. Jane mentally scolded herself for being a sucky friend and vowed to remedy that ASAP.
