"Thanks," Jane said, accepting the gift with a small bit of surprise. People in this town had been scraping by with so little for so long, she wasn't used to someone being generous, especially with something like food. It was a small token for Shelby but it spoke volumes to the sort of person and businesswoman she was, not to mention another sign of the changing times in Austin.
"And if he doesn't like it, he can freakin' lump it," Jane replied with a smirk, finishing her espresso with a gulp even though she knew full well it was a drink you were supposed to sip. She doubted Joel would look a gift horse in the mouth when it delivered an unexpected pastry right to his damn desk but it was sweet of Shelby was sweet to throw in another anyhow.
"Something tells me the crew won't have any trouble finding the place but I'll make sure to tack it to the bulletin board, just in case. You'll have so many boys in blue here you won't be able to turn around without smacking into one of them." After a moment's consideration, Jane reached into her wallet for a second time but instead of pulling out cash like the first time, she located a battered card of her own and placed it on the counter.
"It's got my number at the station there, and my extension. You never know when it might be handy to have a cop on speed dial. Even if it is only to herd the rest of my department out of here so both you and they can get some work done. Again, just in case." Jane peered behind her. A line was starting to form and while it didn't seem like Shelby was in any great hurry to be rid of her, Jane did have to get to work and it wouldn't be exactly kosher to stand around and deny Austinites their right for icing and sprinkles. She picked up her helmet, her jacket, and the bag of doughnuts.
"Gotta jet but...thanks. Again." She paused. She wasn't one to offer positive words of encouragement, especially to strangers, but Jane felt the need reassure the girl somehow. "Something tells me you're gonna do just fine here." She hesitated again, knowing she had to leave but was still dragging her feet. She could talk shit on her coworkers until the cows came home but when it came down it there she was the one who had fallen victim to the comforting and welcoming atmosphere of the Doughnut Hole. The irony was just too damn much and Jane forced her legs to move. "See you around." With a nod, Jane left.
