Jane dug into her back pocket and drew out a few bills, placing them on the counter. It was strange dealing with paper money and not cans of food, not to mention the bizarro notion of sitting at a counter and eating a fresh baked mother fucking doughnut of all things. Just another harbinger of normalcy creeping into Austin's everyday life that Jane was ready to embrace whole-heartily.
"You must be new in town," Jane deduced, watching the complicated process of brewing her espresso with interest. "Anything that didn't have an expiration date on it was a goddamn luxury up until a few months ago. You're gonna have lines out the door for months."
Jane peered into the bag, huffing the sweet perfume of bacon and sugar and letting out a pleased, anticipatory sigh.
"The guys down at the precinct are gonna be so damn jealous when me and my partner have doughnuts and they don't."
