Re: Shelby and Vic
There had been more than a little vacillating on Shelby’s part about whether or not she should go to Rest in Peas. She was pretty sure that one of the people responsible for the restaurant had been who she’d called pretentious on the freenet, she probably shouldn’t have done that in hindsight. In the end the siren call of a burger (she’d hold out calling it good) was enough to put to rest the ridiculous thought that Mr. Glaze Regularity would be able to pick her out of a crowd of people. And there was a crowd.
But thankfully also some open spots in the communal seating. One of Shelby’s favorite ways to eat, actually, so she begrudgingly approved of their restaurant design. She weaved through until she found a seat near the center of the room. The perfect spot to people watch if the company to her right and left and across didn’t want to talk.
“Is this spot taken?” she asked before she sat, surprised when she recognized the man on the other side of the table from the day before.
"Nah, you're good." Vic had just wrapped up dinner with his family and the rest of them had scattered, mingling with people they knew in the large room. Outside, through the restaurant's windows, he could just make out the soldiers lying in watch just in case some geeks decided to break up their evening. Weird how he'd gotten so used to that in just a few months, considering everything.
He, too, recognized his new seat partner once he turned to better see her: the woman from the doughnut shop that Violet had sent him to investigate. "You having a good night so far?"
“So far,” Shelby replied, sliding into the empty seat. “I haven’t tried the menu yet, but according to a few people I talked to, the burgers are the shit.” She flipped the menu opened as she talked, scanning down it quickly.
"You heard right." Vic may have been a little biased, though, considering how the last time he'd had a burger had been back in 2016. He'd have to see how they held up with time, but he'd bet money on them being actual tasty burgers.
“It was actually one of your guys, I think?” She raised her eyebrows to punctuate the question. How many biker gangs were in Austin? “Brave of him to walk in when it was busy too. There were some super dirty looks thrown his way.” Probably some of them were warranted, but Shelby didn't really get that either, since most of her information was secondhand; she and her grandmother had been too busy putting other things in order to get mixed up in the biker stuff.
Vic shrugged his left shoulder, nodding confirmation. He had to assume he'd been one of theirs, considering if one of the fucking rogues had been the one to say it he probably would've shot up the place instead of coming by and talking up the burger truck during doughnut rush hour. "Yeah. Probably one of ours," Vic agreed. He definitely knew the kinds of looks the patch had probably received. "Guess he was really needing some sugar to brave that out."
