It all happened so fast. Olivia had been just about ready to leave for her walk over to work when she heard the noise: some booming sound, followed by another, then another. And it sounded like it had come from somewhere really close. She'd jerked upright, looking up to make sure that everyone was accounted for at home, and yes, there they all were, before her mind skipped over to the other people in her life who lived in the district. Nick and Babs -- where were they? And where had those noises come from? The crazy shit going on over the last month had seemed like they'd been winding down, especially considering the message that had been posted on the Freenet just a day ago. Savannah had confirmed its message too, once she'd gotten home. Great. Nick wasn't answering his phone. They'd been meant to meet at 8AM at work -- just a little earlier than usual, but early enough for her to worry without reason that he'd been caught up in something he shouldn't have. So she argued to go, just to make sure everything was okay, which led to Nathan coming along for safety and Savannah joining in order to investigate what was going on with her shelter. Maizie stayed home while the three of them got into the car as quickly as they could, driving down the road towards the smoke billowing up into the air. And yup -- it sure as hell looked like it was coming from the Health Center. Olivia didn't even bother to wait for a go ahead when they pulled up. As soon as they'd begun to slow, she threw the car door open and ran towards the still-smoking building, many of its windows and doorways ajar at best, destroyed at worst. A crumpled body lay against a wall. "Nick!" she yelled, coming to a stop just a few feet away from him. She wanted to shake him, weirdly enough, but Olivia managed to stifle that instinct. Her growing hysteria, however, could not be contained. "Nick! Answer me, damn it!" |
