7:15AM - Their apartment
The sun had risen over twenty minutes ago, waking Demi as light shone in through the two large windows in their apartment. As she slowly let the haze of sleep slip away, she had on a whim silenced Isaac’s alarm, certain that a man should not wake up to a blaring alarm on his birthday. She might have also done it in an attempt to make this year’s birthday better than the last. Demi couldn’t avoid the memories that flooded her mind from a year ago, ones of her attempt at garnering peace between them that had backfired into a shouting match, a slap to the face (Demi slapping Isaac) and in turn Isaac escaping the apartment (and her.). The memories were a brick in the path that had led them here, but she couldn’t help thinking just how much had changed while she lay next to a still sleeping Isaac.
A year ago Demi would have given anything to be anywhere else but sharing space with Isaac, sharing a bed or even loving him. It was funny how things worked, how fate had had an entirely different plan for the both of them. Had it been easy to get to this point? No. Was it easy for them now? Not always. But even in the tough times, Demi knew now that she had someone who loved her -- no strings attached. And she in turned loved him, more than she had loved any man before him -- even Seth.
Which was why she was determined to make this birthday better than the last.
The clock was slowly ticking towards the time in which Isaac usually rose, Demi knowing this because one of the many difference between them was that she was inherently a morning person and Isaac was in fact not. Of course she was tempted to let him sleep or convince him to skip work for the day, but the latter wasn’t realistic when she knew just what his caseload looked like and the former obviously was coupled to the latter.
With a small sigh, knowing that she couldn’t have Isaac all to herself today, Demi shifted turning around in the loose hold Isaac had on her in his sleep and snaked a hand between them, her fingertips brushing against the skin above his boxers and toying with the elastic as she murmured. “Good morning, baby,” there was a pause before she added. “Happy birthday.” Her words punctuated with a gentle kiss.
Isaac let out a sleepy moan, moving into Demi’s touch and returning the kiss. “You know I don’t mind mornings when I get to wake up like this,” he chuckled, his voice a little rough from disuse. It was true though. Despite having a bed partner who got up with the sun for the past year, that hadn’t changed his habits in the slightest. He still preferred to sleep in when given the choice, but if he had to be up early, a greeting like this from the woman he loved wasn’t too shabby.
“Let’s forget work and opening up the bar and just stay in bed all day,” he said, letting his own hand begin to wander down to her waist, his fingers teasing at the skin of her hips.
Demi made her own small noise of contentment as Isaac’s fingers swiped over her skin, curling into his touch like a cat soaking up attention. “Thought you might like it better than an alarm,” she murmured as she pressed a kiss to his neck, just over his pulse point. Despite their differences in morning routines, somehow along the way both had found ways to make it work, Demi often greeting Isaac with coffee (when they had it). But mornings like this, they were so much better than coffee in her opinion.
“You're the birthday boy,” Demi began, her fingers just barely sliding under the elastic of his boxers. “So I’ll do whatever you want,” she moved just enough to look him in the eye, a wicked smile playing on her lips. “Just say the word.” Of course a more responsible girlfriend might have comeback with some remark like “you have to go into work.” Demi was in fact not that kind of girlfriend.
Despite being the DoJ Commissioner, Isaac had no moral dilemma in being late for work because he’d spent the morning in bed with his girlfriend. So rather than do the responsible thing and shut it down, he pressed his hips closer to Demi and moved into her touch while slipping his hands under the elastic of her underwear.
“Think they can manage the office without me for a while,” he grinned, his hand teasing further down.
Demi gave him a little smile before leaning in to press a quick kiss to his lips. “I think they can too,” she agreed, her opinion punctuated with a pleased noise as Isaac’s hand moved lower. “And even if they can’t I really don’t care right now.” Demi added as her own hand slide lower, fingers wrapping around him before she began to move in slow languid strokes, absolutely in no rush to hand Isaac over to his work day just yet.
“You deserve some perks when you're the boss,” Demi murmured against his mouth as she kissed him again, a slow and gentle kiss while her other hand found his and twined their fingers together.
Isaac’s eyes fluttered closed as he let out a low groan, savoring her touch. Birthday or not, this was one hell of a wake up call and he was going to enjoy the hell out of it.
1:00PM - Isaac's Office
He’d been late to work, and honestly pretty distracted all morning, replaying his morning with Demi over and over. But everyone in the office seemed to be giving him a bit of leeway, considering it was his birthday. The shit-eating grin on his face wasn’t hurting anything either.
He was half-way through skimming a file when he heard a knock on the door. Finger marking his place, he looked up and called, “Come in.”
While it had only been hours since Demi had seen Isaac last, she couldn’t erase the smile or the flutter of excitement she felt as she had entered the Department of Justice. That excitement was only dampened a little bit when Isaac’s little blonde secretary had insisted on checking to see if Isaac was available before admitting Demi to his office.
“Your girlfriend is here are you free to see her?” Kitty questioned as she opened the door, noting the paperwork strewn across Isaac’s desk. She gave her boss a look that clearly said “I couldn’t stop her,” as she waited for his reply.
Unlike Kitty, Demi was unconcerned with waiting for a reply and instead chimed in. “Of course he’s free to see me,” as she stood just beyond the blonde, barely contained annoyance towards the younger woman clear in her expression. “Plus, like I told you, I have lunch for him.” She added as she brushed past Kitty. “And donuts.” Demi added, attention turned back towards Isaac as she grinned, knowing only he would understand the significance of said donuts.
Isaac shot Kitty a brief apologetic look before nodding his head and turning his attention to Demi. “Yeah, I could take a break,” he said, smiling, “Thanks, Kitty. It’s all good.”
Kitty didn’t need more prompting than that and left, closing the door on her way out.
Once he and Demi were alone, he gave her an amused but clearly incredulous look. “Honey, you really should to be nicer to her. But I’m willing to let it slide today because you brought me donuts.” Redemption donuts, really. Last year had been such a mess, he was so fucking grateful that things were different today. Who would have thought they’d be here today? At that thought, a goofy smile appearing on his face.
“Sweetheart, when have I ever been nice to a woman who gets to spend all day with you?” Demi countered as she came around the corner of Isaac’s desk, container of donuts in hand and expression just this side of amused. “And Nina doesn’t count, you’re not her type.” There was really no fire behind her words in the moment, which was a stark contrast to a year ago. Everything in her life was as stark contrast to this time last year, if she was being honest, but Isaac was without fail the best part of that overhaul.
Isaac just shook his head with amusement, somehow still surprised at her jealousy. At least Demi could poke some fun at it because it really was true that he wasn’t Nina’s type. Not in the slightest.
The change from just a year ago was exactly reason she wanted to make this birthday better than the last for him. “Are donuts the trick to you letting things slide, baby?” Demi asked with a wicked twinkle in her eyes as she shoved papers out of the way and settled herself on the edge of his desk. “Because here I thought it was sex.” Her tone was teasing and her smile was big as she met Isaac’s gaze.
“Both. Definitely both,” Isaac said very quickly, needing to vocalize that he would take sex or donuts (or better yet: sex and donuts) all day, every day. With her perched in his desk, his hand reached out and began sliding up her calf until it was resting on her thigh. Not too scandalously placed just yet, but it was on its way.
Demi gave Isaac a knowing smile as he was quick to clarify that both could easily have a sway over him. He was never shy about expressing his feelings on the matter, but that never stopped her from feeling a little rush every time it was confirmed that he enjoyed that aspect of their relationship as much as she did. They weren’t perfect, but in this they were perfectly matched.
“So do I get to eat any of these donuts you brought or are you just going to tease me?”
“Oh,” Demi begun as she feigned surprise. “Did you think these were for you?” She held up the bag of donuts with her free hand as she schooled her features into an innocent look. Of course they were and she knew she had said as much upon her arrival, but that wasn’t going to stop her from teasing him a little bit.
Still perched on the desk, she leaned in towards Isaac, her look calculating as if she were about to propose some kind of deal. The words that came out of Demi’s mouth though were anything but. “Do you want a frosted one or powdered sugar?”
6:30PM - Their apartment...again
Today was shaping up to be pretty much the perfect day, not even factoring in the fact that it was his birthday. Morning sex and a visit from his girlfriend, bearing the gift of donuts… well, what more could a guy want? Turned out that his day was about to get even better because Cherry told him that Demi was waiting for him upstairs. Well. If that didn’t wet the appetite…
Walking up the stairs to their apartment he dropped his briefcase off by the door then began shrugging his jacket off as he walked in further.
“Well, well, well, what’s this?”
“This,” Demi began in reply as she stepped out of the bathroom, having just finished changing out of the the t-shirt and shorts from earlier and into an equally Star Wars themed outfit, all for Isaac’s benefit of course. “Is your birthday dinner!” She finished as she crossed the room and came to a stop in front of Isaac, his eyes doing an appraising view of her new outfit as she approached -- causing a grin to spread across his face.
Isaac’s grin told her everything she needed to know. He’s pleased with the little touches, the things she’s purposefully done to bring that grin to his face on a day that should hold nothing but happy memories. Some might have said that Demi was going a little overboard today, but if any of them had experienced Isaac’s last birthday they would know why it was she felt so compelled to make today amazing., and so far she thought she had been doing a pretty damn good job of that. After coming home from the Capitol, she had left the bar in the hands of her staff and spent the better part of the afternoon cooking and then setting up their apartment for Isaac’s birthday dinner.
“Do you like it?” Demi asked as she stood on tiptoe and gave him a quick “welcome home” kiss.
“Love it. Love you,” Isaac said through his grin, his arms wrapping around her waist to pull her in. Demi probably had everything planned out to the minute for tonight but he wanted her to slow down for just a moment and enjoy this. Leaning down he kissed her, letting it linger longer than a standard greeting kiss would be. “Thanks for going to all this trouble for me, baby.”
Demi giggled softly as she leaned into him, the noise muffled by his kiss, willingly letting him dictate the speed at which the evening was to go. “It wasn’t any trouble at all, sweetheart,” she murmured as her fingers deftly worked to remove the tie for around Isaac’s neck and unbutton the top few buttons of his dress shirt. “I did it because I love you,” Demi was no longer surprised by how easily those last three words slipped from between her lips. “And because you’re worth making a big damn deal over.” She added, hands pulling at the fabric of his shirt, untucking it as she peered up at him with a twinkle in her brown eyes. Isaac just continued to grin at her, allowing Demi to take off more and more of his clothing.
“Baby, what are your feelings on gifts?” In the almost year that they had been together Isaac had given her a handful of gifts, all thoughtfully chosen items, while Demi realized she hadn’t given him a single thing, a fact that horrified her when she realized it, but today was the perfect day to remedy that fact. That was, if Isaac was someone who liked receiving gifts -- it was funny that after a year she was still finding things out she didn’t know about him.
Chuckling, Isaac said, “I have a feeling that no matter my feelings on the matter, you have a gift for me. But let the record state that what you’ve done today is already a gift and I really appreciate it. I--” Pauses a moment, debating whether to bring this up, but decides to err on the side of full disclosure “--Last year sucked. I was a fucking asshole and the fact that we’re even here is like this is better than anything I can think of. So.” He stopped abruptly, ironically having a difficult time coming full circle with his thought.
“Well, it did suck, I can’t lie about that. But it’s not like you didn’t have just cause to be an asshole last year,” Demi countered, not wanting to get too bogged down in the memory of the events from last year. “I hadn’t exactly been easy to deal with,” she paused. “I’m still not easy to deal with, you just love me now.” She smiled brightly before rising up on her tiptoes to give him a quick peck of a kiss.
Clearing his throat, moving past his mental block, he added with a smile, “I just. You know I love you. And today’s been perfect. But if you’ve got presents, I’d better see them. We have very strict inspections here at The Bar and quality assurance is of the utmost importance.” Typical Callahan, making a joke of a serious situation.
“I know you do, and trust me this present is the cherry on top of a perfect birthday,” Demi replied, smile bright. She might be the most selfish creature around, but when it came to the people she loved their happiness was just as important to her as her own. “And you know I did this because I love you, not because I thought I had to. I just. I wanted you to have a better memory of your birthday this year, maybe erase the one from last year,” While she spoke Demi had begun to move them over towards their bed where a small gift box sat, all the while giggling at his inspection joke. “Isn’t stuff like that supposed to be my line? I’m the manager after all.” Demi teased while she picked up the box and held it out to him.
“Just so you know I had to give a customer free drinks for a week, but this gift was totally worth it,” she was watching Isaac closely now, waiting for his reaction. “So I think it will pass inspection.”
It didn’t take him long to open the box and Isaac instantly recognized the item as a tie bar. Correction: a Star Wars tie bar! “I think a week’s worth of free drinks is totally worth it because I’m going to look like a GQ mother fucker when I roll into work wearing this,” he grinned, tracing his index finger over the rebellion symbol before looking back at Demi, his smile going even wider. “This is perfect. You were right -- cherry on top to a perfect day.”
Setting the box aside, he leaned in, kissing Demi again before adding, “So I know it looks like you’ve got dinner or something special planned, but do I get to ravage you so that we can at least work up an appetite?” He wiggled his eyebrows at her, making his argument all the more compelling (or at least that was what he was telling himself).
God, Isaac’s happy grin sent butterflies fluttering away in Demi’s stomach and she marveled at the way love for him just seemed to overwhelm her for a moment. Seeing him happy was all she had wanted out of today, and if his reactions were anything, Demi knew she had hit her mark.
With a giggle and an exasperated look, one that was tainted some by the way Demi’s mouth fought to turn up into a smile, she replied. “Sweetheart, it’s your birthday so you call the shots,” She rose up to pressed a kiss to the corner of Isaac’s mouth as her fingers nimbly worked at the buttons of his dress shirt. “Dinner will keep.” Demi added while she hooked her fingers into his belt loops and tugged him towards the bed, her own appetite was for something other than dinner now anyway.
