At least being out on her own hadn't hurt the woman's ability to laugh. Closing some of the distance between them, Jane could see her hands were free of spoils or weapons. Still, the sergeant was careful to keep one eye on the girl and one eye on the ramshackle structure. Could house any number of associates just waiting in the shadows, looking to pounce on an unsuspecting officer out on her own. She was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt but not at the expense of her own neck. Jane stuck out an arm in front of her, palm out, to indicate the woman's position was quite close enough for the time being.
"Hate to tell you your options are pretty goddamn limited, as far as new digs are concerned," Jane replied in a sardonic monotone. "Still, better than it used to be."
It would be all too easy to simply point out the nearest registration depot and send the girl on her way; there was a beer in Jane's fridge with her name on it and while her Independence Day celebration was going to be a one-woman affair this year, that didn't mean she wasn't looking forward to it. Except, there was something the woman had said that stuck out in Jane's mind. Knowing she wouldn't be doing her job if she didn't ask, Jane neatly sidestepped the registration query for a moment, delaying her reply in favor of posing a question of her own.
"Oh, 'they' mentioned that, did they?" Jane said, shifting from one foot to the other, her eyes squinted to take in any subtle personality ticks or changes in demeanor. "Made some friends your first day in town?"
