Jane hardly ever went out patrol on her own anymore. Safety in numbers was the name of the game; especially with political tensions being as high as they were, not to mention that shufflers weren't slacking off despite the oppressive July heat. Except, it was Independence Day and while they were a little short-staffed, crime didn't take a holiday. Cops with families had reserved the day off weeks ahead of time and Jane couldn't really begrudge them for wanting to spend the first real July 4th in ages chained to a desk or a squad car. Jane didn't mind taking a few extra shifts so her colleagues could celebrate with their loved ones; she figured they'd do the same for her one day but in the meanwhile it wasn't as if she had anyone at home waiting for her.
So, instead of taking her and Joel's customary cruiser, Jane took the opportunity of the undermanned precinct to take her bike out on patrol. She was nearing the end of her shift when she spotted a person near the ass end of a broken down Army Surplus store. Underneath her helmet, Jane grimaced; she knew it was hard for some of Austin to let go of the hardcore survivalist ways that had kept them alive for so long. With so many legitimately dangerous criminals out and about, nabbing someone for something like looting seemed silly and brought her little pleasure, but the law was the law. Jane returned the lone figure's timorous wave, pulled her motorcycle over to the back exit of the store, parked, and removed her helmet.
"Afternoon," Jane called out. Slight of build and boasting a mane of fiery copper hair, Jane could now see the stranger was a young woman, seemingly on her own. Even so, Jane kept on high alert. Wearing a uniform was akin to painting a target on your back most days and while Jane's gut was telling her than this girl meant her no harm, she still had a job to do and wasn't about to be stupid about it.
"Pretty far from any residential housing out in these parts. You lost?"
