Joel took a minute to reply as he dropped back down into his chair and got comfortable again. With the changes happening in Austin it felt safer to and more certain to schedule things further out than a week. There were still dangers around the corner; the walkers were still a problem on the streets. But It was closer to normal than it had been in a long time.
“I’ll let her know to keep that day open for the foreseeable future,” he replied eventually. “No guarantee for emergencies, but otherwise it’s all yours, Rusten.” He had a feeling he was already a headache to his secretary, Karen, who’d only been given the position the same week Joel had accepted his. He wasn’t very used to making sure people coordinated their visits through someone.
He raised his glass. “To seeing 2020,” he declared, short and sweet. It was a good day if they could end it without injuries, or one of them missing, and Joel hoped for a lot more days like that. He knew the odds as an officer, knew that no day in their life was really guaranteed, but he and Jane had been lucky so far and all he could hope for was that luck to hold out for them indefinitely.
