Who: Pete Whelan and Savannah Posey
Where: Savannah's office
What: Pete tells Savannah about the traveling clinic he started with Lita, much to Savannah's surprise.
When: [backdated] February 2, 2019
Though things felt a little off with Pete lately, mostly because she couldn’t help but feel like he was still judging her for allying the library with the Dog Park, Savannah still invited Pete over to the library. The way Savannah saw it, they’d been friends for too long to stop now. Besides, she’d just spent the last few days surrounded by zombies and seeing a fresh face would be a welcome sight. And maybe Pete was worried about her or something. Savannah tried not to read too much into it. Meeting him at the entryway, she leaned in for a hug before pulling back and smiling. “Thanks for comin’ over. Glad it’s safe, again,” she said with a somewhat humorless laugh. The situation had been grim, but they’d made it out. "I'm just glad I can even actually come over," Pete replied, returning her smile nevertheless even if he couldn't quite strike the concern from his face. Hearing about what had happened to Savannah's shelter over the last few days had been stressful as hell, and he'd just been a bystander via the Freenet. He couldn't even imagine what it had been like to deal with that in actuality. He followed behind her as she led the way out through the entranceway and up to her office, his hands in his pockets. "And that you could meet with me, too. I got some news that I think you might be interested in." After his shift, he'd talked to Bea about the traveling clinic he and Lita had been surreptitiously planning, and it seemed like Bea and Lita had hit it off as well. It felt good to know that it was really coming together into something real; even if he still couldn't stomach what the Hellhounds did throughout Austin, it wasn't right to let them live without access to medical treatment. He was looking forward to telling Savannah about it. With the office door shut behind them, Savannah turned to face him, walking backwards towards the couch and asked, “What kind of news? Good, I hope? Not sure if I can take any more bad news, to be honest,” she grimaced. “But--of course I could meet you. I mean, there’s always somethin’ that needs to be done around here, but I think everyone around here deserves a little down time after what happened.” "Good! Definitely good." He took a seat, leaning back and making himself comfortable. The last time they'd been here, they'd had a pretty intense conversation about the medical situation in Austin. Inspiring, even, which was kind of a cheesy way to look at it but true nonetheless. "I was just talking to Lita earlier, and I think me and my medical student are going to start working with her. Traveling, actually." He grinned, obviously proud of herself, though Savannah’s brows just raised in shock. "To the Dog Park, and wherever else needs help and assistance and can't get it at UMCB. Cool, right? I mean, it'll be dangerous probably, and no one wants to be arrested, but." He shrugged a shoulder as his smile tempered, growing more serious. "It's not okay, the way things are. Talking to you last December helped me see that, and I wanted to let you know as soon as we got it all figured out." To say that Savannah was surprised would be an understatement. Their last conversation about the political and medical situation of Austin had left her feeling a bit unsettled. Pete had asked the hard questions and really pushed her. At the end of that talk, she didn’t feel like he fully understood where she was coming from or knew the kind of sacrifices she’d had to make in order to ensure the security of the shelter. At the end of the day, she’d sided with the devil she knew, and Savannah didn’t think Pete truly understood what that meant. Letting out a slow exhale and combing a hand through her hair, she said, “That’s--wow. That is good news. I’m happy that’s somethin’ y’all decided to this.” It seemed like a bit of a one-eighty, but she was still happy to hear that they wanted to help people that couldn’t go to the UMCB. "Yeah. Me, too." He was still smiling, though it dwindled as he noticed how uncertain she seemed to be about this. Everything from her body language to the tone of her voice was just… off. Pete couldn't quite put a finger on it. "You okay? I kinda… I dunno. Thought you'd be happier about this, all things considered. Especially about me and Lita seeing eye to eye more." “I am,” Savannah replied immediately before pausing, trying to get her thoughts in order before adding, “I just--it seems sudden to me. Especially since last time you were so… harsh. I guess givin’ medical care isn’t the same as makin’ them your allies. But I thought your disapproval was pretty clear. So. I didn’t think I’d see you changin’ your mind any time soon or willingly associate with any of them.” "Yeah. I do get that." Pete shrugged one shoulder, pausing as he tried to gather his thoughts. "I mean, it's been two months? And I've been thinking about this a lot, obviously, though I guess you didn't really have a way of knowing that. But when we talked about that in December, I kind of made my peace with all of it -- your way of thinking about it, anyway -- pretty much before I left that day." “No, I haven’t had any way of knowin’ that. I’ve been assumin’ for the past month or so that we hadn’t seen each other much because of that conversation. Because it didn’t really seem like you were convinced that I was makin’ the right decision, given the hand I’ve been dealt.” She didn’t mean to be so annoyed, but she was. And she hated feeling this weirdness around someone like Pete. He was just… Pete. She was used to having him around and took how comfortable they were around each other for granted. Ever since they “broke up” it had actually felt okay between them until they actually started talking about the messy politics of the city. Maybe opening that floodgate had been a mistake. "Hey. I mean, hold on, okay?" Pete put his hands up, hoping to mitigate Savannah's irritation as he simultaneously tried to figure out how to get himself out of this. "I'm sorry I haven't been around, it's just been kinda busy figuring out how to get my intern on board. And it's not like you didn't just get through some stuff that made it pretty impossible to see you." He had a small point about recent events that made it difficult for him to visit, but she just continued to look at him, thin lipped and clearly unimpressed with this overall logic. "I thought we were on the same page about it last time, though, since we like…" Pete shrugged, pursing his lips. How had they both totally read that situation so wrong? "We had a moment, like a truce, you know? We snuggled. And I was hearing what you were saying about the whole thing, and it's still a really hard situation all around, for everyone, but it's easier for me to see now. And you explaining that helped. So… Yeah, I mean, it's not ideal, but nothing is anymore. So me doing this with Lita is just doing something within my power to make things a little less shitty." Savannah knew better than to argue that physical affection did not equal emotional connection, seeing as they had a bit of a messy past where they didn’t see eye-to-eye on that at all. “Fine. Well, I understand now and I’m glad you’ve come around." "Yeah?" He paused for a moment, waiting for this agreement to be rescinded, and grinned when it wasn't, feeling relieved. It was like he was suddenly completely on board with everything Hellhound-related, but Savannah had helped him be able to at least understand a little more of where they were coming from. "Me, too." Just because Pete’s face was so stupidly infectious, Savannah felt herself smiling a bit now, too. “Yeah,” she confirmed, then said, "Never understood why you and Lita hate each other so much, anyhow. I mean, I dunno how I can be such good friends with the both of you, but you two don’t don’t like each other at all. Is it goin’ okay? Workin’ with her?” "Yeah, it's actually going pretty well." Pete shrugged, that grin still on his face. "She's all right, actually." He was pretty sure that he liked Lita a lot more than she liked him, but that was fine. They at least saw eye to eye on this stuff, just like him and Savannah, and that was all he could ask for now. |
