Jackson and Nathan with a cameo from Rose - 4:30PM
Nathan had found a new love and it came in the form of a burger flipping food truck. He’d trekked out to the Greenbelt for it, and been too damn excited when he found that it had rolled up into LBJ territory. He’d been close to heading down there alone when he’d had the inspired idea to get a hold of Rose. He hadn’t seen much of her since he rolled into Austin. Enough that he didn’t feel like a heel of a friend, but she was busy, and he was busy (and preoccupied for a stretch with Savannah’s kidnapping), and he only assumed it hadn’t been held against him.
So, burgers and Rose’s pretty face and company. The day could go downhill from there and he’d still consider it not that bad. “Every meal, I’m tellin’ you,” he said to Rose after he swallowed down a mouthful of beef and bun, his expressive face punctuated how serious he was about the statement. How gone on real food he was. “It’s still good the second time, right?” Rose had only mentioned after she showed up that she’d already been once, with Pete.
He was halfway to opening his mouth again when he caught someone in line ask for a recommendation, and it sounded so familiar. Enough that he craned to get a good look, then did a double take. “The hell?” he muttered already halfway to standing by the time he looked back at Rose. He forgot to explain anything to her though, and instead cleared the distance from where they sat to the truck, got a better look and froze. The hell, indeed. Nathan hadn’t been imagining anything. It was like a ghost come back.
“Everett, that you?” As far as smart sentences went, it barely passed the test.
