Who: Savannah + Nathan
Where: Unknown + Austin
What: a phone call
When: May 9th, 9:00 am
Savannah: [nails clicking against a table as she waits for Nathan to pick up] Nathan: [his phone rings once, twice, and he checks the screen. It’s Savannah’s number. He picks up before the third ring.] Hello? Savannah: [lets out a sigh of relief] Thank God. Nathan, are you okay? Did they hurt you? It--it’s me, Savannah. Nathan: Savannah? [his voice wavers] I’m fine. Worried about you, but they didn’t do shit to me. Are you okay? Savannah: [sighs again, longer and heavier this time] Been so worried about you. That man was carryin’ me away and when I looked back it looked like they were pushin’ you to the ground--Just, God Nathan, I’m glad you’re okay. And I am too. Don’t know where the hell I am, but it’s far away. Nathan: [his relief deflates with the news] Soon as they got you far enough away they let me back up. How far, Sav? A couple hours or a few days? Savannah: I’m glad they didn’t hurt you. [lets out another sigh of relief] This seems so goddamn unnecessary, though. Far as I could tell, it was at least a day. The back of the van I was in didn’t have any windows so I couldn’t see anything. But it felt like a long time. Nathan: [a frustrated noise] They tell you why they nabbed you and hauled you off to who knows where? Savannah: No, they haven’t really talked to me at all. But I guess after I’m done talkin’ on the phone they said they want to talk. Guess I’ll find out what this is all about then. [exhales slowly, her breath uneven as she tries not to cry] I just want to come home. They said I can after we talk but-- [stops talking, not allowing herself to finish the thought] Nathan: We want you home too. I want you home. [he swallows hard. A sign that he’s trying to keep his emotions under control] Sav, darlin’, If I had even the smallest clue to run with, I’d be chasin’ y’all down. Savannah: [feels her throat tightening at the change in Nathan’s voice] I know, honey. You know this isn’t your fault, don’t you? I’ve been goin’ outta my mind thinkin’ you would blame yourself for not stoppin’ them but it wasn’t your fault. Okay? They just--we were outnumbered. There was nothin’ either of us could’ve done. But I’m gonna do everythin’ I can to get home. Nathan: Yeah, yeah, I know. [another pause as he continues to gather his resolve] Can’t say I ain’t carryin’ some blame, but I’m tryin’ real hard not to beat myself up too bad. Don’t like knowin’ you’re so far, not when I made people promises that I know I won’t be keepin’. [he laughs, shaky] You make whoever took you keep up their side of the agreement, Sav. Savannah: [returns the shaky laugh, biting her lip to hold back a sob] You know I always give ‘em hell, Nathan. Take care of Maizie and Liv until I get back, okay? Nathan: You know I will. [he scrubs a hand over his face] Love you, darlin’. Savannah: I love you, too. [the guard in the room gives her the signal to wrap it up and she lets out a slow, controlled breath] I gotta go. I’ll see you soon. Nathan: [sigh] See you soon. Stay safe, please. |
Savannah: [bites at her lip as the phone rings] Maizie: [to Olivia, looking at the caller ID] Oh my god, it’s Savannah. [answers, almost dropping the phone in her haste] Savannah? Savannah: Yeah, honey, it’s really me. [relief obvious in her voice] I don’t have that long to talk but I just--I wanted to hear your voice and make sure you were okay. Maizie: Oh, thank god! Where are you? Do we need to come get you? I can go get Nathan right now and tell him you’re on the phone. [she stands to stand, but then pauses as something sinks in.] Wait, what do you mean you don’t have that long to talk? Savannah: [sighs] I don't know where I am. Wherever I am, it's hours from Austin. We must've driven a whole day before we got here, but--Maizie, I'm okay. I don't know exactly when I'll be home, but they said it’ll be soon. After I talk to them. Maizie: Oh. Okay. But how -- [pauses] Are they listening in right now? Olivia: [nudges Maizie in the arm] Put it on speaker! Savannah: Yeah, they are. Is that Liv with you? Maizie: [nods to Liv, confirming that the call is monitored] Yeah, sorry. Hold on. [switches to speakerphone] Okay, she can hear you now too. Olivia: How long do you have? Are you sure you're okay? Does Nathan know? Are they like, feeding you? This is so messed up. Savannah: They said 15 minutes. And I'm sure, Liv. I took a hot shower and they fed me a lot. [Eyes the man sitting in the corner briefly but doesn’t receive any kind of warning look] I talked to Nathan already. I really am okay. Just--you know--I would rather be home. Olivia: So there's -- [her eyes lift up to meet Maizie's as she frowns.] There's stuff -- and hot water -- outside of Austin? That doesn't make any sense. Maizie: [shrugging at Liv] It seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through just so they can talk to you. Savannah: I just don’t know. I’ve only been in the one room this whole time. I don’t know where it’s comin’ from, but they had hot water at the hospital, too. Maybe--hell, I don’t know anythin’ about where I am. For all I know they drove us in circles for half a day and I am at the hospital. Maizie: Have you seen anybody else? Kitty is missing too. Savannah: No, honey, I haven’t. I’m sorry. If she’s here, I’m sure she’s okay. It’s wrong that I’m even here in the first place, but I’m not bein’ treated poorly. Olivia: You're gonna talk to them, right? Because I -- we miss you. Maizie: A lot. I mean, I don’t know how this kind of thing is supposed to work, but cooperating is a good thing, right? [a brief pause] I just want you to come home. Savannah: [her voice goes thick with emotion] I want to come home, too, girls. So I’ll do what I have to so I can. Maizie: We know you will. And don't worry about us, okay? We’re just so glad that you're alright. Savannah: Can’t promise that you won’t be on my mind, but I’m glad that you’re okay. I love you both and I’ll be seein’ you soon, alright? Olivia: I'm glad you're okay, too. And, you know. [despite the seriousness of the situation, she can't help the giddy smile that appears on her face] I love you too and stuff. Maizie: [flashing a brief, small smile in response to Liv] We’ll be thinking about you too, the whole time. Love you, Mom. We’re gonna see you soon. |
