“I’m okay,” Kitty began, cheeks flushing pink with embarrassment. “I just lost the hard fought battle to seem less tipsy than I am.” She continued with a laugh as she righted herself, though it took her a second or two longer to remove her hand from Nina’s arm. “We should get moving again, I’m sure you want to get back to Dani,” Kitty didn’t immediately start moving though, because while her manners told her she shouldn’t keep Nina, apparently the rest of her wanted to steal as much time with the other woman as possible. “I could even make it the rest of the way on my own….I think.” Nothing about the tone in her voice sounded certain of that fact, not even a little bit.
"Oh, Dani can make it on her own for a little while longer," Nina said, her expression uncertain -- not because she doubted Dani's comfort in her apartment, but because Kitty seemed a different sort of off-kilter in addition to her tipsiness. And oddly enough, her confusion seemed to temper her own inebriation. "She's familiar with where everything is. We can keep going, if that's okay?"
“Are you sure?” Kitty began, concern written across her features as she asked. “I wouldn’t want to keep you from your date.” God, did she just say that aloud? Had she really had so much to drink that she was throwing away all semblance of propriety and manners? Obviously Kitty couldn’t deny she had thought Dani and Nina had been on a date, more than once, actually. But she hadn’t ever intended to voice that thought, it wasn’t her place to pry into Nina’s personal life. Could she change the subject quickly or get them moving again before Nina registered what she had just said?
"Oh!" Nina said again, her eyes widening almost comically as she realized just why Kitty had been wanting to go home on her own. "No, it's not like that between us. I think one of my friends is real disappointed we never went down that road, but --" Nina cut herself off then, shaking her head, completely oblivious to any reason behind Kitty's concern. She didn't need to get into Demi's schemes just then. "Anyway, that's besides the point. We're just friends. So we can continue."
“Now it's my turn to say ‘oh’ and feel a little silly for making that assumption,” Kitty answered, already feeling her cheeks going what she could only assume was a lovely shade of pink. “Wait, one of your friends was trying to get the two of you together? Why didn’t it work out?” Now she was being nosy and she knew she was being nosy, but Kitty would later blame this all on the alcohol -- still that didn’t stop her from quickly adding. “You don’t need to answer any of that, it’s not really my place to go poking into your personal life.” Because even if she was drunk, the manners that had been instilled in her since birth were hard to be rid of. In that same vein Nina received no argument from Kitty about continuing, because arguing further would have been impolite, especially after her assurance that Dani wouldn’t mind. So instead the younger woman took one final moment to make sure she had her balance back and then began walking on towards her apartment again.
Nina followed as if on cue, quiet at first while she wondered what to say. She wasn't opposed to answering Kitty's question, but the truth of it was she didn't actually know why it didn't work out besides: "I suppose neither of us ever thought of each other that way to begin with, so even though my friend wanted it to happen… It's not like you can turn things on or off like a switch." After all, romance had never been her strongest point. She trailed off then, glancing over at the woman next to her, the one she kept finding even when she wasn't looking for her. "Does that make sense?"
