“I’m sure about it,” Nathan responded easily, after all this woman must've lived in Austin a lot longer than Nathan (obviously). He wasn’t an expert on how a city like Austin ran anyway, not after the geeks. Every city he’d come through had been brought to it’s knees by the chaos of the undead. “Wasn’t lookin’ for a fairytale, in any case.” Even if had the roles been reversed he would have padded the information a little; he got the impression that Dani was a straight-shooter, not necessarily concerned with other people’s comfort. He could respect that, came across people (both men and women) like that a lot.
And he was half-tempted to ask her for the information that Pete and Lita had been vague about, just to see if she'd fill in a few of the missing pieces, but he didn’t. “I got that impression already,” he said instead, rocking back on his heels. “They got a prison to throw me into if they feel like it?” Nathan asked as a joke mostly, to break up the dire feeling that had washed over him with her words.
He started up the staircase again, slow enough that Dani could get ahead of him, since he still didn’t know exactly which staircase door would lead him where he wanted to go. “What do you get for workin’?”
