Fewer situations were more fraught these days than interactions with Ahna, Joel hated to admit. That she agreed to a family dinner was a blessing in itself, though he suspected it had more to do with Mina and less to do with him. He loved his girls, a statement of fact that couldn’t be shaken by anything, but it never changed whatever his oldest continued to hold against him, that no matter how he tried hadn’t been erased from their relationship yet. Maybe they were too similar, maybe he should have taken a different approach; he used to run through all those options just after she left, until Mariah told him to let it go, because working it over like a detective wasn’t going to make a difference either. So, family dinner. For one reason or another Mariah had opted out, and took Kaisha with her. Her relationship was as good as it could be with her step-daughters, but he assumed she guessed he wouldn’t mind the time with just the two of them. His wife was very astute. She set the table for him before she left, and the meal -not anything he made, as promised- was tucked away to be kept warm until they sat down. For his part he was lounged on the sofa, with a set of files until his girls showed up. They had keys, and could let themselves in, it was just a question of who’d show first. |
