You leave home, you move on and you do the best you can
Who: Kitty Gilmore and Zach Montgomery (NPC)
Where: Their new apartment (Isaac’s old one) in the Capitol.
What: Kitty settles into the Capitol as best she can.
When:Backdated, January 9th, 2019
It shouldn't have been, but it was surprising just how quickly things could change - even at the end of the world. A week ago Kitty would have never seen herself settling into an apartment in the Capitol, moving her kids into an actual bedroom of their own and having a space that felt more like a home and less like making due with what they had. The young woman had been told the space had been vacated recently, the signs of that all over the expansive (for the Capitol) apartment. Kitty didn't know the man that had lived here last, and what she heard from the gossip mill made her curious, but she chose to withhold her judgment - giving Isaac Callahan the benefit of the doubt. Maybe that was why instead of packing up his stuff and tossing it out like garbage, she placed it all into boxes and stowed it in the corner of what had once been a dance studio, but now acted as Miah and Gigi’s bedroom. The office having been turned into a third bedroom for Zach, who didn't understand Kitty’s desire to hold onto items that had belonged to the previous resident. Kitty had reasoned that if she had left a place in a hurry, she would want the next person to treat her stuff with respect - hence she would hold onto this, maybe see if she knew someone who might know where the deputy commissioner had fled to and could possibly return it to him. How they even got to this point of moving in, settling down, making a new home here was a rollercoaster of emotions. There had been her conversation with Bea, followed just days later by an attack on the prison that lead to her mother texting her furiously about moving to the Capitol where it was in her words “safe”. Kitty didn't believe any place was truly safe, but her reason for remaining at Fox Grove were quickly dwindling and after a lengthy conversation - and some persuading - Zach had been won over to the idea of moving and the decision was made. The shock to Kitty’s system was something else entirely, to go from living amongst their peers, to governing themselves (even if she didn't agree with how things had been run) and calling the shots, to this, to living with adults, families, a society that felt more like a mini-city than a group of young adults proving a point. As she set the last of Isaac Callahan’s stuff into the box, Kitty reasoned that she would get used to this, all of it. But for right now it felt alien. Bea was at the Hospital and not just down the hall, her parents were merely a five minute walk through the building and for the first time since the end of the world had begun Kitty didn't have a job to do, well, except for being a mother to her own children. Maybe a job would give her purpose of some sort? Help her settle in here. As she taped the box shut, Kitty made the decision to look for a role to fill in this place, maybe that would chase away the remnants of feeling like an outsider in this place. “What's with the thousand yard stare?” Zach broke into her thoughts, glancing at her from his place on the floor of the living room where he had Gigi and Miah playing with the scare handful of toys they shared. “Nothing,” Kitty replied, trying to dodge discussing her current thoughts. “You know nothing doesn't work with me, right?” He fired back, standing up moving over to where Kitty was. “So spill.” Heaving a sigh, Kitty rose from her seat on the floor and gave Zach a look that clearly read “Do we have to do this now?”. But when he didn't budge, she sighed again and explained. “I just feel a little lost,” Kitty moved into the small kitchen and Zach followed behind her. “At Fox Grove I took care of the kids, but here, I have nothing to do. I mean your dad has you set up with a entry level job with the DoR already, so you've kind of found your place,” she paused again. “But I don't have one and so I feel a little unsure.” Zach gave her a sympathetic look, if anyone understood Kitty’s need to do something, it was him. “They have daycare here or something, don't they? Maybe you could get a position there? Or ask your dad to find you somewhere to help?” “Maybe,” Kitty sighed, busying herself with the task of emptying out the few kitchen supplies they had into the drawers. Reaching out a hand, Zach stilled her movements and turned her towards him again. “We’ll settle in here, just give it time,” he paused, glancing over his shoulder at their kids. “You don't have to find your purpose the moment we’re all unpacked here.” “You're right,” She replied, “I’ll give it time.” And she would give herself a little while to settle in, but only a little while. |
