Who: Isaac Callahan
Where: DOJ, his apartment and then...?
What: A resignation and a departure
When: January 7, morning (before everything goes crazy)
Seeing Demi in La Quinta yesterday and helping Addie with whatever plan she had to get the Hellhound Officers made it very clear to Isaac that he couldn't stay at the Capitol anymore. Even if he wasn't caught doing anything wrong, after another Hellhound escape, he would be in charge of coming down on them even harder in order to make sure that justice was served. If he stayed and actually did his job, he would have to make sure that Demi was arrested again and thrown back into La Quinta... make sure that she was back under Warden Reason's jurisdiction, leaving her fate entirely in his hands... And he just couldn't do it. He wouldn't do it.
He didn't support the Hellhounds, but he did love Demi. It seemed impossible for those two facts to sit side by side in his brain, but it was the truth. Olinger was going off the deep end in his thirst for "justice" and the Warden was a blood thirsty sick fucker. He'd told Addie that he wouldn't kill anyone--knew that it would break him entirely--but people like the Warden and any of those bastards who had touched Demi honestly didn't deserve to live. And here their justice system was so fucked up that men like them were seen as the heroes. Isaac couldn't stand by and witness it anymore. So he needed to leave.
After his visit to La Quinta, he'd finished his day at the office like normal but once he arrived home he began packing. He had no plan whatsoever. He didn't know where he was going. He didn't know how he was going to make it out there on his own. He didn't know if he could put his differences aside and accept that the Hellhounds were the lesser of two evils so that he could go to the LBJ. With so many uncertainties, he focused on the task at hand, packing what food he had in his apartment and whatever other weapons and supplies he could put together that evening. A few pairs of clothes fit in the extra space, but the reality of him potentially having to run from Patrolmen and zombies alike kept his packing overall light.
It was a restless night of sleep and he woke with the sunrise (if only Demi could see him now). Early as it was, he was able to sneak into the DoJ and leave a letter of resignation on his desk (he'd been raised with manners, after all) before quietly making his way back to his room to collect his things. On his final sweep of his apartment, he found Demi's locket and hastily shoved it into his pocket, before leaving a place he'd called home for the last two years for presumably the last time.
Leaving was easy, especially when he said he was spending a few nights at the UMCB, and then... he just started walking, praying that everything at La Quinta today went according to plan. Because he sure as shit still didn't have one.
To whom it may concern: Effective immediately, I, Isaac Callahan, will be resigning from my position as Deputy Commissioner here in the Department of Justice. The gross misconduct of this department and those associated with it are no longer values I can stand behind and defend. Last time I checked, the justice system, at its core, stood for everyone's innocence until proven guilty. There's a lot of bad shit in this world, but by stooping to (and surpassing) the level of the raiders you're so threatened by, you're no better than them. I refuse to compromise my integrity to uphold the paranoia and insanity this government now stands for. Hasta la vista, baby. Isaac Callahan |
