The random act of flying, drool-soaked thread was a bit startling, but Marcus noticed that Kenzie just took it in stride. She didn't look surprised or annoyed. A patient woman, then, well-suited to kids. He couldn't remember being Liam's age, but he was pretty sure if he'd messed with anything that belonged to his dad like that, he'd have earned at least one bruise for it. Some loud, new curse word to absorb into his vocabulary, along with the reminder that Cesar was not well-suited to kids. If anything, that man had always resented the fact that they were a natural product of sex. Not that he'd bothered to do anything about it.
Marcus, on the other hand, was a more proactive sort. A vasectomy had been his 33rd birthday present to himself.
"Be rude if I didn't," Marcus tossed back with a warm smile, though he mostly meant the flirting. It would have been an insult if he didn't at least acknowledge how sexy she was, even if the presence of a toddler kept more of his overt behavior in check. Accepting her offer of the couch was more a product of the dangerous weather conditions than any innate politeness, but Marcus nodded. "Yeah, he's all right. Good arm."
And God knew he could use a safe place to sleep, so that was appreciated. Marcus looked at Liam for a second, thinking about the medical books she'd said belonged to her ex. Was he the dad? Or was that someone else? She was giving off the impression that it was just the two of them there, so Marcus decided that it was unlikely a jealous partner would come storming through the door to take umbrage at his presence in her trailer. While that didn't mean it was a safe subject to discuss, it meant he could at least ask. She didn't seem like the sort who'd just throw him out for asking. "So is his dad still around? Not gonna be pissed I took the couch or anything like that?"
He'd still take the couch, anyway, since it'd been freely offered. But it'd be nice to be forewarned if there might be future repercussions.
