Fuck. "Appreciated," Marcus snorts, accepting the offer of a dry couch over having to go back out in the weather. Immunity didn't mean he wanted to chance getting any of that shit on him. He'd finally read the warnings posted by whatever passed for the city's authority figures. Maybe the local sheriff or chief of police or whatever wasn't CDC-authorized... but who the hell knew anymore?
He took the strip from her and read it, pleased to see that the temperature wasn't high enough to mean panic or ice baths or anything else. He'd figured that much, given that the baby was conscious and seemed to be aware of his surroundings, but it was important to be sure. He couldn't very well ask Liam how he felt and get an actual answer. Unless the fever was dangerous, he wasn't going to give the kid any acetaminophen. There was a mild fever, though, and if it had gone on for a while now without improving... ear infection was seeming more and more likely.
"Naw, never worked in pediatrics," he admitted to her, unable to suppress a smirk at the sight of Liam pulling up his mother's shirt. So maybe he had something in common with babies. They did seem to appreciate an available pair of tits. He shook his head a bit, amused but trying to stay serious. If it was that obvious that he never worked with kids, that he also didn't have any of his own probably didn't even need to be said.
"Look, mamÃ, I'll be real straight with you. I got amoxicillin, but only caps, not liquid. Dosage is too fucking high for an infant, so we'd have to cut the pills smaller," he felt bad for not knowing what kind of dose would be safe for a baby, but he really had no idea, and didn't want to mislead her, so he added: "Give him too much, you got vomiting and a lot of liquid shit on your hands. Too little don't do him no fucking favors, either. -- Lo siento, for the language, but it's f-- true. No creo que sea una buena idea. Unless you want to guess at the dose."
It was possible that she could. Maybe this kid was prone to ear infections and got them all the time. Maybe she'd been around a ton of fucking kids and had a good, solid idea of what was usually prescribed for them. She looked too young to have other children, but she'd mentioned brothers. Who knew how big her family was, or what she'd have picked up.
