Kenzie noticed the lack of answer from Marcus but she didn't say anything just yet. If he had a better place to stay, she wouldn't push it. Maybe one of her girls had already offered for all she knew.
She smirked when she saw how Marcus reacted to Liam's peace offering and how fast Marcus was to pull up his hair after Liam's chubby little fingers were pried out of it. "I take it you weren't a pediatric nurse before the world turned upside down?" That, or he was the most nervous pediatric nurse she had ever met, which was unlikely. Kenzie shook her head at his own question. "No, my brothers have been running back and forth so I didn't have to chance it with him. Liam draws a lot of attention being one of the few little ones around any more. The ladies go wild for him and trips take twice as long."
Kenzie simply nodded when Marcus started giving her an explanation about fevers. She knew the purpose and she knew the potential problems that could arise but again, she played dumb. Silence was golden today. Kenzie took the thermometer and stood up with Liam, grabbing a toy for him before sitting back down. She set the little boy on the edge of the table and put the temperature strip under one of his chubby arms and held his arm in place with one hand. He started to try tugging his arm away at first and made little noises to let his mother know he didn't like it but when she gave him the toy, he was distracted easily from what she was doing. Fifteen seconds later though and the toy was thrown across the room and Liam was starting to fuss all over again. Kenzie sighed and just held his arm there for as long as he'd let her before he started to cry to get his way. "Oh stop it. You're fine," she scolded Liam as she lifted his arm and passed the strip to Marcus. "See? All done," she let go of his arm and he wiggled off the table and right into her lap again, tugging at her shirt. "Not now, baby," she said softly, fixing the tank top back to where Liam was tugging it up.
The soft thud of the rain and blobs accompanied by Marcus's voice had Kenzie just shaking her head. "I'll get you a pillow and blanket for the couch when you're done with him. Can't have the camp nurse turning into like jello now, can we?"
